Chapter 6 - The Rehearsal Night

The Grand Ballroom at the St. Regis Hotel in Buckhead was bathed in soft, amber light. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting shimmering reflections across tables covered in white orchids, silver dinnerware, and fine crystal.

Over eighty guests had gathered for the wedding rehearsal dinner—the elite of Atlanta society, major commercial lenders, city officials, and high-profile media executives whom Naomi Vance had meticulously invited to showcase her family’s triumphant return to wealth.

Gavin looked magnificent in a black tuxedo, standing near the champagne tower, laughing with a group of real estate developers. Naomi wore a floor-length emerald dress, her neck adorned with a diamond necklace that I knew was rented because their personal accounts were already overdrawn by six figures.

Damian stood near the bar, nursing a bourbon, while Brianna stood three paces behind him in a modest navy dress. She looked pale, but her eyes were fixed on me as I entered the ballroom.

I wore a floor-length white silk gown—the very gown I was supposed to wear for our rehearsal walk. I looked like the perfect, radiant bride.

“Alyssa, my darling!” Naomi gushed, gliding toward me with open arms and kissing both of my cheeks. “You look absolute breathtaking! Gavin is a lucky man.”

“Thank you, Naomi,” I smiled warmly. “Tonight is going to be unforgettable.”

Gavin walked over, wrapping a strong, possessive arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side. “Ready for the big night, baby? Tomorrow, everything becomes official.”

“Yes,” I murmured, looking up into his handsomely deceptive face. “Tomorrow, everything changes.”

At 8:15 PM, after the second course had been served, Richard Vance stood up at the main table, tapping his crystal glass with a silver spoon. The ambient chatter in the ballroom fell quiet.

“Friends, colleagues, and esteemed guests,” Richard began, his voice deep and booming with false warmth. “Tonight, we gather to celebrate the union of two extraordinary families. My son Gavin has found a true partner in Alyssa—a brilliant, successful businesswoman who embodies everything our family stands for.”

The guests clapped politely. Gavin squeezed my hand under the table, giving me that confident, arrogant wink.

“Before we raise our glasses,” Richard continued, gesturing toward a waiter carrying a leather binder, “Gavin and Alyssa have agreed to execute their formal family trust consolidation right here tonight, as a symbol of our complete trust and shared future.”

The waiter laid the leather binder in front of Gavin and me. Inside were the prenuptial agreements, the trust consolidation forms, and the cross-collateralization addendum we had discussed.

Gavin quickly signed his name in bold, sweeping black ink, sliding the pen toward me with a triumphant smile.

“Your turn, beautiful,” he whispered in my ear. “Sign it, and let’s start our life together.”

I picked up the heavy gold fountain pen. I looked at the signature line. I looked at Naomi, who was leaning forward with hungry, greedy eyes. I looked at Damian, who was grinning smugly into his bourbon.

Then, I deliberately laid the pen down flat on the crisp white tablecloth.
