Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The silence in the ballroom was immediate and sharp.

Gavin’s smile flickered, a sudden edge of impatience creeping into his voice. “Alyssa? What’s wrong, honey? Just sign on the dotted line.”

“I can’t sign this, Gavin,” I said smoothly, my voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room.

Naomi’s laughter was tight, nervous. “Oh, Alyssa, don't be silly! It’s just formal paperwork, dear—”

“I can’t sign it,” I repeated, turning to face the eighty guests sitting in the ballroom, “because I don't sign contracts with criminals.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Richard Vance slammed his hand on the table, his face turning an angry, blotchy red. “What is the meaning of this insolence? Gavin, control your woman!”

Gavin reached out to grab my arm firmly, his fingers digging into my skin. “Alyssa, you’re making a scene. Let’s step into the hallway right now—”

I snatched my arm back with a sharp, commanding motion. “Touch me again, Gavin, and the police officers standing outside that door won't wait for me to finish my speech.”

At that exact moment, the double doors at the back of the grand ballroom swung open.

Elena Rostova walked in, flanked by four uniformed Atlanta Police officers and two federal investigators from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division. Following right behind them were two assistants carrying stacks of bound, black folders.

Panic erupted across the Vance table. Damian stood up so fast his chair crashed backward against the hardwood floor.

“What is going on here?!” Naomi shrieked, clutching her diamond necklace.

“What is going on,” I said, walking slowly toward the center of the head table, “is that the Vance family is completely bankrupt. They owe thirty-four million dollars to defaulted commercial lenders.”

The guests began whispering frantically, several prominent developers leaning forward in shock.

“That’s a lie!” Richard roared, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at me. “She’s insane! She’s having an emotional breakdown! We have medical records proving her mental instability!”

“Ah, yes,” I smiled coldly, pulling a piece of paper from my clutch purse. “The falsified medical report signed by Dr. Harrison, who received a two-hundred-thousand-dollar kickback from Vance Global Holdings last March.”

I signaled to Elena’s assistants. They began systematically handing out the black folders to every major investor, reporter, and city official sitting at the tables.

“Inside those folders,” I announced, my voice echoing like thunder through the crystal chandeliers, “you will find complete bank records detailing how the Vance family systematically drained Sterling Logistics after forcing Brianna Sterling into a fraudulent trust agreement. You will also find wire transfer logs showing their attempt to do the exact same thing to my advertising firm.”

Gavin stared at the black folder dropped in front of him, his face drained of all color, his lips trembling. He opened it, his eyes wildly scanning the printed wire transfers, the secret audio transcriptions, and the cross-collateralization addendum he had signed five minutes ago.

“You...” Gavin whispered, looking up at me in horror, realization dawning on him like a physical blow. “The addendum... you tied our debt directly to Vance Global...”

“That’s right, Gavin,” I whispered, leaning over the table until my eyes were inches from his. “You thought you were signing away my company. Instead, you just legally bound every asset your family owns to cover my agency’s dummy liabilities. You are completely ruined.”
