Chapter 2 - THE FALL OF THE KING

The foyer of our mansion had transformed from a domestic crime scene into a federal military staging ground within seconds.

Victor Calder did not look like a man in his late sixties. He stood six-foot-three, built like an iron pillar, wearing a bespoke double-breasted charcoal suit that smelled faintly of expensive tobacco and cedarwood. His eyes were small, sharp, and grey as storm clouds over the Atlantic.

When his eyes landed on my face—taking in the purple swelling along my cheekbone, the torn fabric of my blouse, and the dark blood staining my mouth—the ambient temperature in the room seemed to drop by twenty degrees.

"Bella," my father said softly.

He didn't rush to me with weak panicking gestures. He walked forward with slow, deliberate steps, his boots echoing sharply on the marble. Two of his private tactical security officers stepped beside me, gently offering a warm cashmere coat to drape over my shivering shoulders and handing me a wet cloth to clean my face.

My father stood over Kyle, who was trembling in the leather armchair, staring up at the titan he had unwittingly provoked.

"Victor Calder," Kyle whispered, his voice barely audible, his confidence completely destroyed. "You're... you're her father?"

"You touched my daughter," Victor said. His voice was not loud. It was a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "For three years, I allowed her to play house with you because she claimed she loved you. I allowed you to use my capital through offshore trusts. I allowed you to pretend you built an empire from nothing. And this is how you repay the house of Calder?"

"Mr. Calder, please!" Kyle gasped, scrambling out of the chair and dropping straight onto his knees—the exact spot where I had been bleeding moments before. "It was a mistake! A complete misunderstanding! Isabella was hysterical, she attacked Thalia, I was only trying to restrain her—"

SMACK!

My father’s hand struck Kyle across the face with the force of an iron beam!

Kyle spun across the marble floor, hitting his shoulder against the base of the grand staircase, groaning in pain as blood burst from his lip.

Thalia shrieked, backing away toward the dining room doors, her hands pressing against her mouth in absolute terror.

"Do not speak her name with your filthy mouth," Victor said coldly, stepping over Kyle's grovelling form. He turned his head toward the man standing by the entrance. "Arthur."

Arthur Vance, the lead federal prosecutor for the Northern District, stepped forward. He pulled a thick leather binder from his briefcase, refusing to even look at Kyle.

"Kyle Whitmore," Arthur read in a flat, clinical tone. "As of 11:04 p.m., the Department of Justice, in conjunction with the Securities and Exchange Commission, has executed seizure warrants for all physical and digital assets belonging to Whitmore Holdings, its subsidiaries, and your personal accounts."

"Arthur!" Kyle begged, clutching at his bruised lip, staring up at the prosecutor he had paid off. "Arthur, we have an agreement! I paid you two million dollars last month into your Zurich account!"

Arthur Vance’s face remained completely stoic. "Those funds were flagged by Calder Dominion’s intelligence network three weeks ago, Mr. Whitmore. I signed a full confession and cooperation agreement with Mr. Calder four hours ago in exchange for federal immunity. Your bribe was recorded, logged, and delivered directly to the grand jury."

Kyle looked like he had been struck by lightning. He turned his desperate gaze toward Thalia. "Thalia... call our lawyers... call the PR team!"

Thalia didn't move. Her eyes were fixed on Arthur Vance's name tag, her mind working rapidly as she processed the horrific reality unfolding before her.

"Wait..." Thalia stammered, her voice shaking violently as she looked between Arthur Vance and my father. "Vance? Arthur Vance? Are you... are you related to me?"

Arthur Vance turned his cold grey eyes toward her. "I am your uncle, Thalia. And as of ten minutes ago, your father has removed you from the family trust. You are completely on your own."

Thalia gasped, stumbling backward against a display table, knocking over a $50,000 Ming dynasty vase that shattered into a thousand worthless pieces on the floor.

My father turned to look at me. "Isabella. Are your belongings packed?"

"I don't need anything from this house, Dad," I said quietly, holding the cashmere coat tightly around my bruised chest. "Everything in this estate was bought with my dignity. I want none of it."

"Good," Victor nodded. He looked down at Kyle, who was weeping silently on the floor, holding his bloody jaw. "This house no longer belongs to you, Whitmore. The land beneath this marble was purchased by a Calder subsidiary five years ago. You have fifteen minutes to vacate the premises before my security detail removes you for trespassing."

"You can't do this!" Kyle sobbed, his voice cracking with desperate rage. "I built this company! I am the CEO of Whitmore Holdings!"

"Not anymore," my father said smoothly. He pulled a silver pen from his pocket and tapped a document held by his executive assistant. "Thirty minutes ago, Calder Dominion executed its voting rights through our debt-conversion shares. I am now the sole majority owner of Whitmore Holdings. My first act as chairman was firing you for gross misconduct, criminal fraud, and domestic assault."

Victor turned his back on the ruined man, extending his arm to me. "Let us go home, my dear. The air in this place smells of garbage."

I walked down the steps, stepping cleanly over the navy-blue divorce folder Kyle had thrown at me earlier. I didn't look back at him. I didn't look at Thalia, who was now weeping hysterically against the wall as federal agents began filing into the room to catalog the mansion's contents.

As I stepped out into the cool midnight air, getting into the back of my father's bulletproof Maybach, I heard the faint, desperate screams of Kyle Whitmore echoing from the front porch as his security guards locked him out of his own life.
