Chapter 4 - THE PRELIMINARY HEARING

The Cook County Courthouse in downtown Chicago was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, news vans, and flashing police lights.

The news of the catastrophic collapse of Whitmore Holdings—and the shocking revelation that the quiet, humble wife of the CEO was actually the sole heiress of the trillion-dollar Calder Dominion Group—had dominated global financial headlines for three weeks.

When my motorcade of three armored black Cadillacs pulled up to the courthouse steps, a wave of camera flashes exploded like lightning against the grey morning sky.

I stepped out of the vehicle wearing a tailored navy-blue Victoria Beckham suit, black oversized sunglasses, and dark heels. I walked up the steps with my chin held high, flanked by six imposing Calder security officers and my lead trial attorney, Evelyn Reed.

Reporters shoved microphones toward my face, shouting questions over the roar of the crowd:

"Ms. Calder! Is it true Kyle Whitmore stole millions from your family?"

"Isabella! Are you pursuing criminal charges for the assault?"

"What happens to Thalia Vance's unborn baby?"

I answered none of them. I walked straight through the heavy glass doors of the courthouse, entering the high-security VIP wing.

Inside Courtroom 402, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Kyle Whitmore sat at the defense table.

The transformation was astonishing. Gone was the pristine, arrogant tycoon in the $5,000 Tom Ford suit. He wore a cheap, wrinkled grey suit provided by his court-appointed public defender. His hair was messy, his jaw covered in uneven stubble, and dark circles dragged down his hollow eyes. He looked thirty years older, broken and completely defeated.

When I entered the room, his head snapped toward me. A flash of desperate hope lit up his dark eyes.

"Isabella!" he gasped, trying to stand up from his chair.

"Sit down, Mr. Whitmore," Judge Margaret Turner ordered sharply from the bench, striking her wooden gavel once. "Another outburst, and I will have you held in contempt."

Kyle collapsed back into his seat, his hands trembling as he stared at me across the aisle.

Beside him sat Thalia Vance, wearing a plain orange orange prison jumpsuit, her hands handcuffed to her waist belt. She had no makeup on, her blonde hair pulled back into a messy bun, looking utterly shattered as she stared at the floor, refusing to look anyone in the eye.

My legal team took our seats at the plaintiff table.

"We are here today for preliminary motions in the matter of Calder v. Whitmore," Judge Turner announced, reviewing the massive stack of legal files before her. "We have civil petitions for immediate marriage annulment, asset division, criminal assault charges, and corporate fraud indictments."

Evelyn Reed stood up smoothly from our table.

"Your Honor," Evelyn said, her voice echoing clearly through the pristine courtroom. "We present to the court certified medical records from Chicago General Hospital detailing twenty distinct blunt-force trauma injuries sustained by my client, Isabella Calder, on the night of December 14th."

Evelyn tapped her tablet, transmitting high-resolution photographs of my bruised body directly to the judge’s monitor.

Judge Turner’s face hardened into stone as she reviewed the images. She looked down over her glasses at Kyle.

"Furthermore," Evelyn continued, "we offer full forensic audio and video recordings recovered from the security servers of the Whitmore estate—servers that Mr. Whitmore foolishly believed he had erased—showing the defendant physically assaulting my client while defendant Thalia Vance encouraged the violence."

Kyle’s public defender stood up weakly. "Your Honor... my client was under extreme emotional distress due to corporate financial pressures—"

"Corporate financial pressures do not justify beating a woman within an inch of her life, counselor!" Judge Turner snapped, her voice trembling with disgust.

"Additionally, Your Honor," Evelyn pressed on, "we present evidence that Mr. Whitmore fraudulently used Ms. Calder's forged signature on seven loan guarantees totaling $120 million to fund his personal offshore accounts."

Thalia suddenly raised her head, looking at Kyle with pure hatred. "You told me those signatures were legal, Kyle! You told me she signed them voluntarily!"

"Shut up, Thalia!" Kyle hissed through his teeth.

"Quiet in my courtroom!" Judge Turner slammed her gavel down hard.

The judge looked down at the defendants, her eyes cold as ice.

"In light of the overwhelming physical, digital, and financial evidence presented today," Judge Turner declared, "this court grants an immediate decree of absolute marriage annulment. Isabella Calder’s maiden name is restored, and all claims by Mr. Whitmore to any shared or personal property are permanently terminated."

Kyle leaned his head forward onto the table, sobbing quietly.

"As for the criminal charges," Judge Turner continued, "bail for Kyle Whitmore is set at ten million dollars cash. Bail for Thalia Vance is set at five million dollars. Both defendants are to be remanded into federal custody immediately pending trial."

Two armed bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing Kyle by his arms and pulling him to his feet.

"Isabella! Please!" Kyle screamed, thrashing against the bailiffs as iron handcuffs clicked around his wrists. "Look at me! I loved you! I was just confused! Please don't do this to me!"

May you like

I stood up slowly from my desk, looking him dead in the eye as he was dragged past my table.

"I gave you my heart, Kyle," I said, my voice carrying over his frantic screams. "You chose to trade it for fake gold. Enjoy your cell."
