Chapter 9 - A FAMILY RESTORED

On a crisp autumn afternoon in Geneva, the Calder family estate hosted a grand private gathering to celebrate my father’s 70th birthday.

The estate grounds were decorated with hundreds of white rose arrangements, glowing lanterns, and long banquet tables set under the trees. Industry leaders, heads of state, and family members from across Europe had gathered to honor Victor Calder.

I sat at the head table beside my father, holding a glass of red wine, watching Julian play tag on the lawn with my younger cousins.

My father leaned over, setting his hand gently over mine.

"You look truly happy, Bella," he said, his gravelly voice filled with a deep, emotional warmth.

"I am, Dad," I smiled, looking at him. "For the first time in my life, I am completely happy."

My father looked out at the guests, taking a slow breath. "Three years ago, when you called me from that hallway in Chicago... my heart broke into a thousand pieces. I blamed myself for letting you marry that pathetic creature."

"You couldn't have stopped me, Dad," I replied softly. "I had to learn the lesson myself. I had to realize that hiding who I was didn't protect me—it only invited people to take advantage of me."

"And look at you now," Victor smiled proudly, his eyes glistening with rare tears. "You didn't just survive, Isabella. You conquered."

Julian walked up to our table, slightly out of breath, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade, his face flushed with laughter.

"Your cousins are relentless, Mr. Calder," Julian laughed, sitting beside me and kissing my cheek affectionately. "I think they exhausted me more than a twenty-hour architecture review."

My father raised his wine glass toward Julian. "Welcome to the Calder family, son. You'll get used to the pace."

We toasted under the golden canopy of the autumn trees, our laughter ringing out through the crisp mountain air.
