Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The study was lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and filled with the faint scent of old leather and polished wood. Dominic sat behind the heavy oak desk, while Isabella stood beside him, her arm resting on the back of his chair.

Standing in a line before them were the three main household staff members: Arthur, the elderly house manager who had served the Serrano family for thirty years; Elena, the head housekeeper; and Clara, the young assistant maid hired six months ago.

The tension in the room was palpable. Marcus stood by the door, his arms crossed over his chest.

"One of you permitted an unauthorized access point in my home," Dominic said, his voice flat and cutting. "Or one of you assisted in placing a camera in my wife's private quarters."

Elena gasped, covering her chest. "Mr. Serrano! I would never—I have worked for your family since you were a boy!"

Arthur stepped forward, his posture rigid despite his advanced age. "Sir, I oversee every vendor and guest personally. No outsider has ever stepped foot on the residential floor without my direct supervision."

Dominic’s eyes slowly turned to Clara.

The young maid was staring down at her polished shoes, her fingers fidgeting frantically with the hem of her apron. She was breathing fast, her shoulders hunched.

"Clara," Dominic said softly.

The girl jumped as if she had been struck. "S-yes, sir?"

"How long has my uncle Matteo been paying you?"

Clara's face drained of all color. "I—I don't know what you mean, Mr. Serrano! I just clean the second floor!"

Marcus stepped forward from the door, placing a thin paper folder onto Dominic’s desk. "We pulled her bank records ten minutes ago, boss. Monthly cash deposits made at a branch in Queens, starting five months ago. Exactly matching the time Mrs. Serrano started receiving the boutique returns."

Clara burst into tears, sinking to her knees right there on the rug. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I didn't want to! They said... they said they would hurt my brother if I didn't help them!"

Isabella felt a knot form in her stomach. She moved away from Dominic's chair and knelt in front of the sobbing girl. "Clara, look at me."

The maid raised her tear-stained face, shaking uncontrollably.

"What did they make you do?" Isabella asked gently. "Tell me everything."

"The lady... Miss Celeste," Clara sobbed out. "She brought the little camera in her bag when she stayed here. She told me where to put it. She said it was just to keep an eye on you so they could help Mr. Serrano with his public image. She said... she said you weren't right for him, and they needed proof that you were unstable!"

Dominic stood up slowly from behind the desk, the heavy chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Unstable?"

"Yes!" Clara cried. "They told me to put the notes in the garment bags whenever the delivery boxes came from the tailor! Miss Celeste wrote the cards, and I slid them inside the plastic wrap before Mrs. Serrano unpacked them!"

Isabella felt a cold shock run through her system. "Celeste wrote those cards? The ones telling me I was too fat, too ugly, that I didn't belong beside him?"

"Yes!" Clara nodded frantically. "She gave me five written notes in advance. She told me to put them in the dresses that Mr. Serrano bought for you. She said... she said if you felt terrible about yourself, you’d refuse to go to the galas, and then Mr. Serrano would have to go alone or take family members instead."

Dominic was terrifyingly silent. The full scope of the psychological warfare waged against his wife was finally clear. It wasn't just a simple political plot; it was a deliberate, malicious campaign designed to destroy Isabella's self-esteem from the inside out, using her deepest insecurities against her until she withdrew from public life entirely.

"Why the photos?" Dominic asked, his tone dropping to a whisper. "Why send them to my phone today?"

Clara wiped her nose with her sleeve. "Because... because Mr. Matteo got angry last week. He said time was running out. He said if Mrs. Serrano didn't leave you or if you didn't miss the family assembly tomorrow, he was going to leak those pictures of Mrs. Serrano to the media and frame it as if she was having an affair."

Isabella let out a sharp breath, her hands trembling. "They were going to doctor the photos?"

"They had someone edit them," Clara admitted, her head hanging low. "They were going to send them to the tabloids to make Mr. Serrano look like a cuckolded fool right before the voting board met."

Dominic walked around the desk, stopping right beside Isabella. He reached down and helped her stand up, holding her close to his side.

"Marcus," Dominic said calmly.

"Sir?"

"Take Clara downstairs. Keep her locked in the guest room until tomorrow morning. She will be coming with us to the estate to deliver her statement in person."

"No! Please!" Clara whimpered, but Marcus gently yet firmly escorted her out of the room, followed by Arthur and Elena, who were both white-faced with shock.

Once the heavy oak doors clicked shut, the study was quiet again.

Dominic turned Isabella toward him, taking both of her hands in his. "Now you know the whole truth, Bella. It was never about your body. It was never about your beauty or your worth. You were attacked because you are the center of my life, and they knew breaking you was the only way to break me."

Isabella looked into her husband's eyes, seeing the pain and rage burning within them. For months she had suffered in silence, looking at her reflection with shame, thinking she was the flaw in his perfect world. But the shame was gone now. In its place was a burning determination.

"They tried to make me feel small, Dominic," she said softly, her voice steadying. "They tried to make me hide in the dark."

May you like

"They failed," Dominic said firmly.

"Yes," Isabella replied, her jaw setting into a hard line. "They failed. Call the tailor back, Dominic. I’m going to wear that plum gown tomorrow night."
