Chapter 5 - The Mastermind’s Gambit

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over Manhattan, casting a pale, cold light across the city. Inside the master bedroom of the Serrano townhouse, the tailor was making final adjustments to the deep plum gown.

Isabella stood on the raised wooden pedestal in front of the three-way mirror. The dress fit her like a glove—its rich velvet fabric hugging her curves, cascading down into a subtle train that pools around her silver heels. The dark purple tone complemented her fair skin and red-auburn hair, which was styled up in an elegant, modern twist.

For the first time in months, Isabella didn't look at her body with criticism. She saw a woman who was standing tall, ready to step into a den of wolves.

Dominic walked into the room wearing a tailored black tuxedo. He stopped a few feet behind her, his eyes taking in her reflection. The intensity in his look made Isabella’s heart leap.

"You look stunning, my love," he murmured, walking up to wrap his arms gently around her waist from behind, resting his chin near her ear. "Absolute perfection."

"I don't feel afraid anymore, Dominic," she said, placing her hands over his. "Is that strange?"

"No," he smiled faintly in the glass. "That's who you've always been. They just mistook your kindness for weakness."

A soft knock at the door broke the moment. Marcus entered, carrying a encrypted laptop.

"Boss, we just intercepted a private transmission from Matteo's compound in Long Island," Marcus reported. "He’s called an emergency session of the family council two hours before the formal dinner tonight. He’s planning to table a vote to strip your executive authority over the holding group, citing 'family instability and personal negligence.'"

Dominic turned around slowly. "He thinks he has the board locked up?"

"He has Celeste and three of the older uncles on his side," Marcus explained, tapping the screen. "With Celeste's vote, they hold forty-nine percent of the voting power. Matteo only needs one more signature to cross the fifty-percent threshold and force you out."

"Celeste won't vote against me," Dominic said coolly.

"Sir, she signed a proxy agreement with Matteo yesterday afternoon right after the boutique incident," Marcus revealed. "She’s backed into a corner. She thinks if you win, she’ll be ruined, so she’s banking on Matteo taking total control."

Isabella turned around on the pedestal, her velvet dress rustling softly. "She’s acting out of fear. Matteo must have something on her too."

"He does," Dominic said, his eyes narrowing. "Celeste ran up a massive gambling debt in Macau three years ago. Matteo bought out the debt through a shell company. He’s been holding it over her neck ever since. That's why she did his dirty work."

Isabella shook her head. "So she sacrificed me to save herself."

"She tried to," Dominic corrected. "But she made a fatal mistake. She forgot that in this family, loyalty isn't bought with fear. It's earned."

He turned back to Marcus. "Is the file on Matteo's offshore accounts ready?"

"Fully verified by our forensic accountants in Zurich," Marcus confirmed. "Twenty-two million dollars embezzled directly from the family's charitable foundation over the past six years. It’s enough to put him in federal prison for the rest of his life."

"Good," Dominic said, adjusting his cuffs. "We won't use it until we're inside the room. I want Matteo to think he’s won. I want him to stand up in front of the entire family, announce his victory, and then I will tear his world apart brick by brick."

Isabella stepped off the pedestal, looking at Dominic with unwavering confidence. "And what about me? What is my role tonight?"

Dominic took her hand, lifting it to his lips. "Your role, my queen, is to walk into that dining hall, hold your head high, and remind every single one of them who rules this family."
