Chapter 2 - The Engagement Gala

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel glittered under six massive crystal chandeliers that cast thousands of sharp, dancing specks of light across the crowded floor.
Three hundred of the city’s most prominent real estate developers, investors, politicians, and socialites filled the room, sipping vintage champagne and nibbling on caviar tartlets.
At the center of the raised dais stood Grant, wearing a bespoke tuxedo, his glass raised high as he laughed with the chairman of the Municipal Land Board. Beside him, Celeste shone in a floor-length emerald gown designed to highlight her twelve-week baby bump, her hand resting constantly over her abdomen as if guarding a royal treasury.
Vivian stood nearby, holding court among a circle of wealthy society matriarchs, her voice carrying easily over the soft string quartet music.
"Grant has finally found a woman who understands a man's true needs," Vivian announced grandly, taking a delicate sip from her flute. "A real wife supports her husband's legacy. She doesn't hide away in hospitals feeling sorry for herself over a girl."
"And where is Claire?" asked Mrs. Montgomery, an older woman whose family controlled one of the largest private equity funds in the state. "I heard she gave birth just three weeks ago."
Vivian waved her gloved hand dismissively. "Claire was simply unsuited for the demands of the Sterling family. She agreed to the divorce quietly. She knows her place."
Grant stepped up to the microphone standing at the edge of the stage. The crowd gradually quieted, turning their attention toward the podium.
"Thank you, everyone, for coming tonight," Grant began, his voice smooth, confident, and booming through the state-of-the-art speakers. "Tonight is not just about celebrating the continued expansion of Sterling Holdings. It’s about celebrating legacy. My grandfather built the foundation, my mother preserved it, and soon, my son will inherit the empire."
The room erupted into polite, enthusiastic applause. Celeste beamed, leaning over to press a soft kiss against his cheek while camera flashes strobed across the stage.
"To the future of Sterling Holdings," Grant shouted, raising his glass higher. "And to my son!"
"To the future!" the crowd echoed.
Suddenly, the grand oak double doors at the back of the ballroom clicked open.
The laughter and chatter near the entrance died down instantly. A ripple of sudden, bewildered silence began at the rear of the room and washed forward like a cold wave toward the stage.
I walked into the ballroom.
I wore a floor-length, backless silk dress in dark, midnight navy—a color that made my pale skin look luminous under the crystal chandeliers. My dark hair was styled into an elegant, vintage knot, and my posture was perfectly straight, unmarred by any trace of recent childbirth or physical exhaustion.
In my left arm, I held three-week-old Lily, wrapped in a simple, exquisite white cashmere blanket.
In my right hand, I carried a single, heavy cream envelope, sealed with a thick stamp of red wax.
Walking two steps behind me was Daniel, looking formidable and imposing in a tailored charcoal tux, accompanied by two uniformed court couriers carrying dark leather briefcases.
The string quartet stumbled, missed a chord, and stopped playing entirely.
Grant’s smile froze on his face. His arm slowly dropped from Celeste’s waist as he stared across the fifty feet of polished parquet floor separating us.
Vivian’s champagne flute hovered halfway to her lips, her eyes widening in absolute shock and immediate outrage.
"What is she doing here?" Celeste hissed under her breath, her hand tightening reflexively over her stomach. "Grant, call security! Get her out!"
I didn't rush. I walked slowly down the central aisle, the crowd parting silently on either side of me, whispers exploding through the room like dry autumn leaves catching fire.
"Is that Claire?" "She looks incredible..." "Why is she carrying the baby here?" "Look who's behind her—that's Daniel Mercer from Mercer Hale!"
I reached the foot of the raised stage and stopped. I looked directly up into Grant's eyes.
"Claire," Grant rasped, his confidence faltering for a fraction of a second before his face hardened into an angry mask. "You've lost your mind. This is a private corporate event. You have no right to be in this building."
Vivian marched over to the edge of the stage, pointing a trembling finger down at me. "How dare you drag that child into a public venue to cause a scene! Have you no shame?"
I looked at Vivian with a calm, freezing smile. "I came to deliver a gift, Vivian. After all, you were so concerned about legalities and legacy when you visited my hospital room."
I stepped up the two wooden stairs of the stage. Security guards made a move toward me, but Daniel instantly stepped into their path, pulling a laminated judicial injunction from his coat pocket and holding it in front of the head guard's face.
"Touch her, and you'll be cited for federal obstruction before you leave this carpet," Daniel said in a quiet, terrifying tone.
The guards backed off immediately.
I walked up to Grant, stopping just three feet from where he stood beside his pregnant fiancée.
I held out the sealed cream envelope.
"What is this?" Grant demanded, refusing to touch it. "More custody demands? I told you, my lawyers are handling everything through the firm."
"This isn't about custody, Grant," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly through the silent ballroom. "This is about full disclosure. You claimed every asset we touched belonged to you. You claimed this company, this life, and your legacy were built entirely by your hands."
"Because they were!" Grant snapped.
"Open it," I said simply.
Grant glared at me, then snatched the heavy envelope from my fingers, tearing open the red wax seal with aggressive, frustrated movements. He pulled out the single sheet of crisp parchment inside and unfolded it.
I watched his face carefully.
First, his eyebrows pulled together in confusion as his eyes scanned the official header of Mercer Hale & Associates.
Then, he reached the middle section—the certified breakdown of ownership structures revealing that ninety-two percent of Sterling Holdings' common voting shares were owned directly by the Mercer Heritage Trust, of which I was the sole living beneficiary.
His face drained of color so fast it looked as if his blood had ceased to circulate.
"This... this is a mistake," Grant stammered, his fingers crumpling the edges of the paper. "This is old paperwork. I founded Sterling Holdings!"
"You were appointed Chief Executive Officer by my grandfather's trust board six years ago, Grant," I said, my voice smooth and crystal clear. "You were an employee. A salaried administrator. You never owned the company. You only managed my family's money."
Gasps erupted from the front row of corporate guests.
"What is he talking about?" Mrs. Montgomery whispered loudly. "Sterling Holdings belongs to the Mercers?"
Celeste reached out, snatching the paper from Grant's trembling fingers. She read the bold lines at the bottom, her eyes darting frantically between the text and Grant's pale, sweating face.
"Grant..." Celeste whispered, her voice cracking. "What does this mean? You told me you owned the entire firm!"
"It means," Daniel interrupted, stepping onto the stage and handing a formal court summons directly into Grant's limp left hand, "that as of six o'clock this evening, the Mercer Heritage Trust has officially terminated Grant Sterling's employment as CEO due to gross breach of fiduciary duty and unauthorized conversion of corporate funds."
Grant stood frozen, looking like a man who had stepped off a cliff and hadn't yet realized the air beneath his feet was empty.
Vivian rushed up onto the stage, grabbing Grant's arm. "This is absurd! This is a bluff! My son built this empire!"
I stepped closer to Grant, leaning in so only he, Celeste, and Vivian could hear my final words.
"You took my self-respect in that hospital room, Grant," I whispered, looking straight into his wide, terrified eyes. "You threw paper at my newborn child and called her useless. Now, I am taking your company, your house, your cars, and your name."
I turned my head toward Celeste, eyeing her small belly with deep, mocking pity.
"And as for your precious son," I added softly, "you might want to ask your fiancée why she's so confident about his delivery date... considering your medical file from Dr. Aris shows you had a permanent vasectomy fourteen months ago."
Celeste’s eyes stretched wide with pure, unadulterated terror. She gasped, taking an instinctive step backward, her foot catching on the hem of her emerald gown.
Grant slowly turned his head toward Celeste, his mouth open, his eyes filled with a horrific, sickening realization.
"What... what did she just say?" Grant whispered, his voice trembling violently.

I didn't wait for her answer.
I turned around, cradled Lily securely against my chest, and walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, leaving the Sterling family to implode under the blinding flashes of three hundred cameras.
