Chapter 5 - The Motel Room

The Oakridge Motel sat squeezed between an abandoned textile warehouse and a noisy highway overpass three miles from the industrial port.
Neon lights buzzed flickered red outside the rusted window of Room 114, casting harsh, vibrating shadows across the peeling yellow wallpaper and stain-covered carpet.
Grant sat on the edge of the squeaking mattress, wearing the same crumpled dress shirt he had worn for three days. His face was covered in thick dark stubble, his eyes were sunken, and an empty bottle of cheap bourbon lay tipped over on the nightstand beside a greasy pizza box.
On the other side of the tiny room, Vivian sat on a plastic folding chair, her head buried in her hands, her designer handbag resting on the dirty linoleum floor.
"He won't answer my calls, Grant," Vivian wept, her voice cracked and weak. "Your uncle Richard turned his phone off. The country club canceled my membership this morning. They sent a courier to collect my locker keys!"
"Shut up, Mom," Grant rasped, his voice raw from smoke and cheap alcohol. "Just shut up!"
"How dare you speak to me like that!" Vivian snapped, lifting her face, though her eyes lacked their usual fiery venom. "I am your mother! I stood by you in that hospital! I helped you get rid of that useless girl!"
"And look where it got us!" Grant screamed, slamming his fist against the cheap wooden headboard. The thin wall shook violently. "I lost Sterling Holdings! I lost the penthouse! My name is a laughingstock on every business channel in the country!"
The bathroom door creaked open.
Celeste stepped out, wearing an oversized bathrobe she had taken from the St. Regis before their eviction. Her face was pale, devoid of makeup, and her expression was filled with nervous, frantic exhaustion.
"Grant, please stop shouting," Celeste whimpered, touching her stomach. "It's not good for the baby. The doctor said I need complete rest."
Grant slowly turned his head toward her. His dark, bloodshot eyes locked onto her face with an intensity that made Celeste instinctively step back toward the bathroom threshold.
"The baby," Grant repeated quietly, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. "Right. Our precious son."
He stood up from the bed, his tall frame swaying slightly as he took two steps toward her.
"Grant, what's wrong with you?" Celeste stammered, her voice trembling. "You're scaring me."
"When Claire was at the St. Regis," Grant said, his eyes narrowing to slits, "she said something about Dr. Aris. She said something about a vasectomy."
Celeste’s breath hitched violently. Her cheeks lost what little color they had left, turning the shade of chalk.
"She... she was lying!" Celeste blurted out quickly, her hands gripping the doorframe. "She was just trying to ruin our engagement party! She wanted to embarrass you in front of your board members!"
"Then why did my attorney call me an hour ago?" Grant asked, stepping closer until he was standing right in front of her. "He said Mercer Hale submitted certified medical records to the judge. Records signed by Dr. Aris. Certified fourteen months ago."
Vivian gasped from her chair, her eyes darting between Grant and Celeste. "What? What records?"
"Fourteen months ago," Grant whispered, staring into Celeste's terrified eyes. "I had a vasectomy, Celeste. I was declared sterile."
Celeste swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she backed herself against the bathroom sink. "Grant... vasectomies fail! It happens all the time! You read about it online! It's a miracle... it's our miracle baby!"
Grant grabbed her by the shoulders—not violently, but with a desperate, crushing grip that forced her to look straight into his eyes.
"Tell me right now," Grant demanded, his breath smelling heavily of bourbon. "Is this my son?"
"Yes!" Celeste cried out, tears streaming down her face. "It's your son! I swear to you, Grant! It's your heir! You have to believe me! If you don't believe me, we have nothing left!"
Vivian stood up from her chair, her hands shaking as she pulled a silk handkerchief from her bag. "Grant, she's right! Claire is playing mind games with you! She wants you to turn on Celeste so we forfeit my father's trust inheritance! We need this boy!"
Grant stared at Celeste’s weeping face for ten agonizing seconds. He wanted to believe her. He needed to believe her. If this unborn boy was not his, then he had destroyed his entire existence, thrown away his real family, and ruined his career for absolutely nothing.
"The court-ordered DNA test is on Tuesday," Grant said, his voice cold as ice as he released her shoulders. "If that test comes back positive, we get the inheritance and we fight Claire for fifty percent of the trust."
He stepped back, grabbing his coat from the floor.
May you like
"And if it comes back negative, Celeste," Grant added, looking at her with eyes that were completely dead, "you better run before I find you."
He slammed the motel door behind him, stepping out into the cold November rain.
