Chapter 3 - THE OUTRAGE OF THE GUESTS

The atmosphere in the country club transformed instantly from a festive wedding celebration into a courtroom of public opinion.

Whispers burned through the crowd like wildfire. High-society members of the country club, many of whom were business associates of Daniel’s real estate firm, stared at Chloe with absolute disdain. In their elite world, scandal was tolerated, but public exposure of cold-hearted child abandonment was unforgivable.

"Did you hear that?" a woman in the third row whispered loudly. "She left six babies?"

"She lied to all of us," another society member muttered, eyeing Daniel. "She told everyone at the charity gala last year that she didn't have children from her previous marriage."

Daniel’s face flushed blood-red. He stepped forward, grabbing Chloe by the arm. "Is this true, Chloe? You told me your ex-husband kept the kids away from you through court orders! You said he was dangerous!"

Chloe frantically grabbed Daniel’s hands. "Daniel, darling, no! They’re lying! They manipulated those records! Luca turned them against me!"

Before Daniel could respond, my second daughter, Maya, who was now twenty-two and a practicing paralegal, stepped out from behind the head table holding a black leather binder.

"My mother is right about one thing," Maya said into another microphone near the DJ booth. "There were court documents."

Maya opened the binder, pulling out certified legal transcripts bearing the seal of the state family court.

"In 2014," Maya announced clearly, "my father petitioned the court for minimal child support—just two hundred dollars a month per child to help buy groceries. My mother hired high-powered corporate lawyers to declare personal bankruptcy under a shell company so she wouldn't have to pay a single dollar to her six daughters. Here are the signed affidavits bearing Chloe’s personal signature."

Maya held up the documents for the front tables to see. The signatures were unmistakable.

Daniel stared at the paper in total horror. He was a corrupt corporate businessman, but even he understood the public relations nightmare unfolding before his eyes. Cameras on smartphones were flashing everywhere; half the younger guests had already started recording the confrontation live.

"You lied to me for fifteen years," Daniel hissed at Chloe, letting go of her arm as if her skin burned him. "You made me look like a fool in front of the entire business community!"

Chloe stood completely isolated in the middle of the dance floor. Her expensive sequined dress, her designer shoes, her thousands of dollars of cosmetic surgery—none of it could shield her from the overwhelming shame pressing down upon her.
