Chapter 6 - THE REPERCUSSIONS

Two weeks after the wedding, the fallout reached its climax.

Daniel filed for divorce from Chloe, citing irreconcilable differences and fraudulent concealment of legal liabilities. Having signed a strict prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage—ironically insisted upon by Daniel himself—Chloe was left with virtually nothing.

The shell companies she had used to hide her assets from our original child support petition were uncovered by state tax auditors following the newspaper's investigation. The state Attorney General opened a formal investigation into Chloe for systemic fraud and tax evasion.

One rainy afternoon, a knock came at my front door.

I opened it to find Chloe standing on the porch. She was no longer wearing designer silk or oversized sunglasses. Her hair was messy, her clothes were simple, and her face looked aged, stripped of the glamour she had spent fifteen years hiding behind.

"Luca," she choked out, her voice trembling in the damp air. "Please. I need to speak to you."

I stood in the doorway, my broad frame blocking the entrance to the home I had built for my girls.

"There is nothing left to speak about, Chloe," I said calmly.

"They're taking everything!" she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "Daniel kicked me out of the house. The state is suing me for back child support and fraud. I have nowhere to go! My own kids won't talk to me!"

I looked at her, feeling no anger, no hatred, and no desire for revenge. I felt only a cold, profound emptiness.

"Fifteen years ago," I said softly, "I stood right here holding a nine-month-old baby, begging you not to walk out that door. You looked at me and said I couldn't give you the life you deserved. You chose your life, Chloe. Now you have to live it."

"Luca, please! I'm the mother of your children!" she shrieked hysterically.

May you like

"No," I replied, holding her gaze with unyielding strength. "You were just the surrogate. I am their parent. Goodbye, Chloe."

I closed the door firmly, locking the deadbolt with a decisive click.
