Chapter 8 - THE LEGAL RECKONING

The state audit into Chloe’s financial maneuvers did not stop at mere civil penalties.
Three months after she showed up at my front door, the District Attorney's office formally indicted Chloe on multiple felony counts of fraud, perjury, and willful evasion of court-ordered child obligations.
The court trial was short and brutal. Maya, who had recently passed the bar exam, volunteered to assist the prosecution as a special legal advisor, ensuring every single document from fifteen years of Chloe’s deceptive practices was presented to the judge.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge did not hold back his disgust for Chloe’s actions.
"Mrs. Chloe Vance," the judge declared, his voice booming through the courtroom, "you did not simply leave a marriage. You orchestrated a complex, illegal scheme to abandon six helpless children while living a life of extreme luxury. You lied under oath, committed financial fraud, and stripped your former husband of the financial support his children were legally owed."
The judge sentenced Chloe to three years in a state correctional facility, along with a order to pay restitution of over two hundred thousand dollars in back child support—money that would be placed directly into a trust fund for Lily and Grace’s future education.
Chloe was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs, weeping hysterically, looking around the gallery for a sympathetic face. There were none. Daniel had already finalized their divorce, her teenage children refused to attend the trial, and my daughters sat quietly in the front row, watching justice finally prevail after fifteen long years.

"It's over now, Dad," she whispered. "The past can't touch us anymore."
