Chapter 2 - The Morning After

The sun rose over the mist-shrouded vineyards of Cedar Veil Estate, painting the rolling hills in brilliant shades of gold and amber.

By 8:30 A.M., the main dining room of the stone manor was buzzing with activity. Evelyn Bennett sat at the head of the long mahogany table, sipping black tea from porcelain china while reviewing the morning financial columns. Claire sat to her right, looking exhausted, dark circles hidden beneath a layer of careful makeup.

Grant Mercer sat opposite Claire, looking thoroughly pleased with himself as he spread strawberry jam over a croissant.

"The press release goes out at noon," Grant said, setting his butter knife down. "Mercer Development and Bennett Hospitality announcing a joint fifty-million-dollar luxury expansion of Cedar Veil. We'll break ground on the sixty-unit resort villas by the end of the month."

Evelyn smiled warmly at him. "It’s a new era for our family, Grant. For years, we’ve been held back by conservative management and... unproductive dead weight."

Claire looked down at her coffee, her fingers tightening around the porcelain handle. "Did anyone check if Daniel picked up his clothes from the guesthouse?"

Evelyn waved her hand dismissively. "Security checked at dawn. His truck is gone. He didn't even leave a note. The man was a coward, Claire. You gave him six years to make something of himself, and he preferred digging dirt and fixing tractor engines to standing beside you."

"He didn't argue last night," Claire muttered, a faint trace of unease flickering in her voice. "He didn't get angry. He just... looked at me."

"Because he knew he had no leverage," Grant scoffed. "He was a broke handyman living off your family's estate. He knew if he made a scene, I’d have him tossed into the county jail for trespassing."

Before Claire could respond, the heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open.

A man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped inside, followed by two assistants carrying heavy leather briefcases. It was Marcus Vance.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, adjusting her reading glasses. "Can I help you? The private administrative offices are in the west wing."

Marcus stopped at the foot of the table, his expression professional, calm, and utterly cold. "Good morning, Mrs. Bennett. Mrs. Ross. Mr. Mercer. My name is Marcus Vance, representing Vance & Associates."

Grant stood up, smoothing his tie, recognizing the name instantly. "Marcus Vance? The corporate acquisition firm out of San Francisco? What is Vance & Associates doing at Cedar Veil?"

"We are here to conduct an immediate audit of the property premises and serve formal legal notices regarding the occupancy status of Cedar Veil Estate," Marcus said smoothly.

Evelyn laughed, a high, mocking sound. "Occupancy status? This is the private estate of Bennett Hospitality! We’ve operated this land for nearly four decades!"

"You have leased this land, Mrs. Bennett," Marcus corrected, pulling a thick document from his assistant's folder. "Under the original 1984 commercial agreement executed by your late husband, Arthur Bennett. A lease that required strict annual capital reinvestment audits and contained a non-transferable clause regarding third-party development."

Grant’s eyes narrowed. "That lease has an automatic twenty-year renewal option kicking in next month. My legal team audited the paperwork three weeks ago."

"Your legal team audited a land trust that dissolved three years ago, Mr. Mercer," Marcus replied, sliding a blue-bound document across the table toward Evelyn. "In October of three years ago, the primary lienholder, Pacific Western Bank, foreclosed on the underlying master title due to unpaid municipal bonds accrued by Bennett Hospitality."

Evelyn’s face turned gray. "That’s impossible! We restructured those bonds!"

"You attempted to," Marcus said. "However, the debt was purchased, the foreclosure was finalized, and the master title of all four hundred sixty-eight acres of Cedar Veil Estate was sold at private auction."

Claire stood up, her heart suddenly hammering against her ribs. "Sold? Sold to who?"

Marcus looked directly into Claire’s eyes.

"To the sole owner of Vance Land Holdings LLC," Marcus said quietly. "A private individual who owns Cedar Veil Estate free and clear. Unencumbered by any mortgages, liens, or historical lease extensions."

Grant stepped forward, his voice rising in anger. "Who is the owner? Name him! Mercer Development is prepared to match any buyout offer!"

The dining room doors opened again.

A tall man stepped through the doorway. He wore a crisp, dark charcoal suit tailored to perfection, custom leather dress shoes, and a silver timepiece that gleamed under the sunlight streaming through the arched windows. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his posture was commanding, radiating an aura of quiet, absolute authority.

Claire gasped, clutching the edge of the table.

It was Daniel.
