Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

The next morning, news of the corporate quake at Cedar Veil Estate leaked to the regional business press.
BENNETT HOSPITALITY LEASE TERMINATED AT CEDAR VEIL MYSTERY BILLIONAIRE DANIEL ROSS REVEALED AS SOLE OWNER MERCER DEVELOPMENT MERGER COLLAPSES AMID LIQUIDITY CRISIS
Reporters and news trucks gathered at the main gates of Cedar Veil, but private security kept them firmly off the property.
At 11:00 A.M., Evelyn Bennett stormed into the main administrative wing, accompanied by two high-priced defense attorneys from San Francisco. She looked wild-eyed, furious, and utterly desperate.
I was sitting in the conference room with Marcus and our legal team when Evelyn shoved past the security guards at the door.
"You think you’ve won, don't you, Daniel?" Evelyn shouted, slamming her leather purse onto the glass conference table. "You think you can just march in here with your billions, humiliate my family, and strip us of everything we’ve built?"
Her lead attorney, a sharp-faced man named Harrison, stepped forward. "Mr. Ross, my client is prepared to file an immediate injunction in county court alleging fraudulent misrepresentation, breach of fiduciary duty, and bad-faith tenancy termination."
Marcus didn't even stand up. He simply slid a thick red folder across the glass table toward Harrison.
"Before you file anything, Mr. Harrison," Marcus said calmly, "I suggest you review pages fourteen through thirty-two of that dossier."
Harrison opened the folder frowning. As his eyes scanned the bank statements, wire transfers, and Cayman Islands account registrations, his sharp expression slowly crumbled into one of pure horror.
"What is this?" Harrison whispered, looking up at Evelyn.
"That," Marcus explained, "is a comprehensive forensic record of two point four million dollars in corporate funds embezzled by Evelyn Bennett from Bennett Hospitality over the past eighteen months. Routed through three shell corporations registered in her maiden name."
Evelyn went rigid. "That’s... those are private family investments!"
"That is grand larceny, corporate tax fraud, and wire fraud, Mrs. Bennett," Marcus corrected firmly. "Mr. Ross has spent the morning deciding whether to hand this file over to the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California."
Harrison immediately closed the folder and pushed it away, taking a step back from Evelyn. "Mrs. Bennett... if these records are accurate, you are facing federal indictment."
Evelyn’s composure finally shattered completely. Her arrogant posture collapsed, her hands trembling as she looked at me with sheer terror. "Daniel... please. You wouldn't send your mother-in-law to prison."
I stood up slowly, looking at the woman who had made it her life's mission to make me feel small.
"You were never my mother-in-law, Evelyn," I said, my voice cold and uncompromising. "You were a tyrant who viewed me as trash and manipulated your own daughter into ruining her marriage to satisfy your greed."
"Daniel..." she whimpered, tears of panic brimming in her eyes. "What do you want?"
"I want you off my land," I said. "You have one hour to pack your personal clothes and leave Cedar Veil. You will sign a full relinquishment of all claims to Bennett Hospitality, you will assign all corporate assets to the master trust, and you will never set foot on this property again."
Evelyn swallowed hard, her mouth dry. "And... and the federal prosecutor?"
May you like
"If you are off this property in one hour and sign the relinquishment documents," Marcus said, "Mr. Ross will refrain from filing a criminal complaint, provided the stolen funds are returned to the corporate trust to pay off Bennett Hospitality's remaining vendors."
Evelyn didn't hesitate. She grabbed a pen from the table, signed the relinquishment papers handed to her by Marcus, and stumbled out of the conference room without looking back.
