Chapter 8 - The Villa on the Appian Way

The Vitelli family estate on the Ancient Appian Way was a magnificent, thousand-year-old stone villa surrounded by soaring cypress trees, classical marble statues, and manicured rose gardens.

By eight o'clock the following evening, dozens of expensive luxury sedans and sports cars lined the gravel driveway of the villa.

Inside the grand ballroom, illuminated by towering Venetian crystal chandeliers, the High Council of the Vitelli Syndicate was gathered. Over forty senior bosses, international trade representatives, and political allies sat along a massive horseshoe-shaped oak table.

At the head of the table sat Senator Paolo Vitelli.

Paolo was a heavy-set man in his early sixties with slicked-back gray hair, wearing a tailored tuxedo and a arrogant, self-satisfied smile. He raised a crystal glass of champagne, tapping it with a silver spoon to call the room to order.

“My esteemed colleagues,” Paolo’s loud, booming voice echoed through the magnificent hall. “We gather tonight under tragic circumstances. As you all know, my beloved nephew, Antonio, suffered a fatal medical emergency aboard a flight from New York three days ago.”

A quiet murmur of feigned sympathy passed through the gathered bosses.

“Antonio was young, ambitious, but ultimately weak,” Paolo continued smoothly, his yellowed eyes gleaming with greed. “He sought to turn our family away from its traditional roots. But tonight, as his rightful successor, I assume the chairmanship of the council to guide us back to true power!”

Paolo raised his glass higher. “To the future of the Vitelli family!”

“I wouldn't drink that toast just yet, Paolo.”

A deep, smooth, terrifyingly familiar voice rang out from the back of the ballroom, cutting through the air like a razor.

The heavy oak double doors of the ballroom slammed open.

Standing in the entryway, framed by the bright lights of the grand foyer, was Antonio Vitelli.

Beside him stood Evelyn Foster, looking magnificent in an ivory silk gown, her arm linked firmly through his. Behind them stood Marco and twenty heavily armed, loyal Moretti guards.

Gasps of absolute shock erupted across the ballroom. Three older bosses jumped to their feet, dropping their glasses onto the marble floor, shattering them into pieces.

Paolo Vitelli’s face went completely, horrifically white. His champagne glass slipped from his fingers, crashing against the table.

“You...” Paolo gasped out, his breath failing him. “You... you’re dead!”

“I know you paid three million euros to make it so, Uncle,” Antonio said coldly, taking slow, deliberate steps down the central aisle toward the head table, his arm supporting Evelyn gently beside him.

“Guard! Arrest him!” Paolo screamed hysterically, waving his arm at his private bodyguards standing along the walls.

Not a single bodyguard moved. They looked at Marco, then at Antonio, and lowered their weapons in absolute submission.

“Your bodyguards work for the Vitelli family, Paolo,” Antonio said smoothly, stopping five feet from his uncle. “And I am the head of this family.”
