Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Rome

The ballroom descended into an agonizing, suffocating silence.
Antonio motioned to Marco, who walked forward carrying a silver tray holding the sealed black medication case and a thick stack of printed financial documents.
“Two days ago, aboard flight AZ-601,” Antonio announced, his voice echoing across the high vaulted ceiling, “an attempt was made on my life using digitalis poison hidden inside my personal medical kit.”
Antonio gestured toward Evelyn.
“This woman,” Antonio said, his voice filled with overwhelming pride, “is Evelyn Foster. She was the senior flight attendant aboard that aircraft. When I collapsed, she refused to let my corrupted doctor touch this case. She preserved the poison, transferred it directly to federal authorities, and saved my life.”
The gathered council members looked at Evelyn

ith a sudden, profound sense of awe and quiet respect.
“Furthermore,” Antonio continued, picking up the financial documents, “Miss Foster analyzed our transatlantic cargo manifests and uncovered a massive, illegal smuggling ring operating through JFK Airport—a ring organized and funded entirely by Senator Paolo Vitelli.”
Paolo’s chest heaved in frantic, panicked breaths. “It’s a lie! She’s just an American waitress in a uniform! You cannot trust her over your own blood!”
Evelyn stepped forward, taking a calm, confident breath, her voice ringing clear and steady across the grand hall.
“The manifest codes AZ-610 and AZ-614 were logged under your private corporate signature, Senator,” Evelyn stated, looking straight into the old politician’s trembling eyes. “The Italian Customs Authority and the FBI in New York have already cross-referenced those manifests with your offshore accounts in Zurich. The warrants were issued thirty minutes ago.”
As if on cue, the heavy exterior doors of the villa were kicked open.
Dozens of armed Italian Carabinieri federal officers and Interpol agents flooded into the grand foyer, led by a high-ranking Italian prosecutor holding a thick sheaf of legal arrest warrants.
“Senator Paolo Vitelli!” the chief prosecutor declared loudly. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, high treason, international smuggling, and corporate fraud!”
The federal officers moved in swiftly, grabbing Paolo’s arms and forcing him to his knees on the marble floor before slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Paolo screamed and cursed in frantic Italian as he was dragged away through the grand hall, his voices fading into the cold night outside.
Antonio turned to face the remaining members of the High Council.
The senior bosses stood up one by one, bowing their heads in complete, absolute respect toward Antonio.
Then, the oldest council member—a white-haired gentleman named Don Carmine—stepped forward, holding out his hands in a gesture of absolute loyalty.
“The council honors you, Don Antonio,” Carmine declared loudly. “And we extend our eternal gratitude and protection to the courageous woman who restored our leader to us.”
All forty bosses bowed deeply to Evelyn.
Evelyn looked at the room full of powerful, dangerous men bowing before her, then turned to look into Antonio’s dark eyes.

Antonio took her hand, lifting it gently to his lips, kissing her knuckles with deep, tender reverence.
“It is over, my love,” Antonio whispered softly. “You are safe.”
