Chapter 3 - THE PRIVATE CLINIC

The black Maybach glided smoothly through the city streets, insulated from the noise of the outside world.

Inside the rear cabin, Mara sat wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket provided by Gabriel. He sat beside her, holding a crystal glass of water, watching her every breath with an intensity that made her chest tighten.

"Drink," Gabriel said softly, offering the glass to her lips.

Mara took a few small sips, her hands still shaking. She looked down at her lap, terrified of what was coming next.

"Why were you at my mother's grave?" Mara asked quietly, her voice hoarse.

"I have been tracking the Thorne family's assets for three weeks," Gabriel revealed. "My intelligence team reported that Senator Thorne was hiding offshore accounts using cemetery land titles. I came to inspect the site personally." He paused, his dark eyes darkening further. "I didn't expect to find you there."

Mara lowered her head. "I didn't know you were... Don Valentine. That night at the bar..."

"I didn't want you to know," Gabriel said softly. "That night, I just wanted to be a man. Not a monster." He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the clean skin near her swollen cheek. "Why didn't you stay the next morning, Mara?"

"Because I knew I didn't belong in your world," Mara admitted, tears finally welling in her eyes. "I was just a maid working double shifts to pay off my mother's hospital debts. I woke up in that luxury penthouse and realized it was all just a dream. I couldn't afford to dream, Gabriel."

Gabriel stayed silent for a moment. Then, his eyes dropped down to her belly, tucked safely beneath the warm blanket.

"And this?" Gabriel asked, his voice barely audible over the hum of the engine. "Is this part of the dream?"

Mara went completely still. She swallowed past the lump in her throat.

"Bianca thought it was Preston's," Mara whispered. "Preston... he tried to corner me in the pantry a month ago. I slapped him and ran. But Bianca saw him outside my door and assumed..."

"I don't care what Bianca assumed," Gabriel cut her off, his voice trembling slightly. "Is it mine, Mara?"

Mara looked directly into his gray eyes, seeing the raw vulnerability hidden behind his terrifying reputation.

"Yes," Mara said softly. "I haven't been with anyone else, Gabriel. Never before you, and never after. It's yours."

Gabriel closed his eyes. A long, shaky breath escaped his lungs. When he opened his eyes again, they were shining with an emotion Mara had never seen in a man before—a profound, ferocious mix of awe and absolute possessiveness.

Ten minutes later, the Maybach pulled into the private underground parking bay of St. Jude’s Medical Center—the most elite private clinic in the state, fully owned by the Valentine estate.

The doctor, a gray-haired specialist named Dr. Aris, was already waiting with a medical team.

Within twenty minutes, Mara was settled into a luxurious private suite, dressed in clean silk garments, while an ultrasound machine hummed beside her bed.

Gabriel stood right beside the bed, holding Mara's hand tightly in his own. He refused to leave the room despite Dr. Aris’s polite suggestion that he wait outside.

"Look here, Don Valentine," Dr. Aris said, pointing at the glowing screen. "The gestational sac is completely intact. The baby suffered no trauma from the incident today. The fetal heart rate is strong—one hundred and forty-five beats per minute."

Thump... thump... thump... thump...

The sound of the tiny heart filling the sterile room was like a wave of thunder.

Mara burst into tears, covering her mouth with her free hand.

Gabriel froze, staring at the little flickering white spot on the monitor screen. His grip on Mara’s hand tightened, his jaw working as he fought back the powerful emotions threatening to break through his icy exterior.

"It's healthy?" Gabriel asked the doctor, his voice thick.

"Extremely healthy," Dr. Aris confirmed, wiping the gel from Mara's abdomen. "However, Miss Whitfield shows signs of severe exhaustion, mild malnutrition, and emotional stress. She needs complete rest, high-grade nutrition, and zero anxiety."

Gabriel looked down at Mara, his eyes dark with iron resolve.

"She will have everything she needs," Gabriel declared quietly. "She will never know stress again."
