Chapter 9 - THE BIRTH OF THE HEIR

Two months later.

A heavy snowstorm was falling over Valentine Manor, painting the rolling hills in pure, pristine white.

Inside the West Wing medical suite of the manor—fully equipped with state-of-the-art obstetrical equipment—the room was filled with quiet tension and intense love.

Mara lay on the bed, her face flushed with sweat, clutching Gabriel's hand with a strength that surprised even him.

"You're doing wonderfully, Mara," Dr. Aris encouraged, monitoring the monitors. "One more big push, my lady! The head is fully crowned!"

Gabriel stood beside her, brushing damp strands of hair from her forehead, his heart pounding harder than it ever had in his entire life. The man who had faced down armed cartels without blinking was terrified for the woman he loved.

"Push, my love," Gabriel whispered passionately, kissing her knuckles. "I'm right here. I'm holding you."

Mara let out a fierce, desperate cry, pouring every ounce of her strength into the final push.

A few seconds later, a loud, clear, miraculous cry echoed through the room!

WAAAAAH! WAAAAAH!

"It's a boy!" Dr. Aris announced triumphantly, holding up a healthy, beautiful baby boy covered in a soft blanket. "A healthy, strong boy!"

Tears burst from Mara's eyes as she collapsed back onto the pillows, exhausted but filled with an overwhelming wave of pure love.

Dr. Aris carefully laid the crying newborn onto Mara's chest.

The moment the baby touched his mother's warm skin, his cries softened into tiny, sweet snuffles. He had a mop of dark black hair and, as he slowly opened his tiny eyes, bright gray irises looked up at the world.

Gabriel dropped to his knees beside the bed. He looked at his son—his heir—and felt a tear slip down his own face, unbidden and unchecked.

He gently reached out a massive, scarred finger. The baby instinctively reached out with his tiny fist, clutching Gabriel's finger with incredible strength.

"He has your eyes, Gabriel," Mara whispered, smiling through her tears.

"He has your heart, Mara," Gabriel choked out, leaning down to kiss her lips with deep, eternal devotion. "He has your sweet, brave heart."

They named him Leo Eleanor Valentine—a nod to strength, and a tribute to the grandmother who lay resting in the graveyard where this journey had begun.
