Chapter 10 - THE KINGDOM WE BUILD

One year later.
The evening sun cast a long, golden glow over the coastal cliffs of Maine.
Sitting on a private ten-acre estate overlooking the crashing blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean was a beautiful stone house surrounded by lush gardens and white rose bushes.
On the wrap-around wooden porch, Emma sat in a comfortable rocking chair, cradling a six-month-old baby girl with dark hair and bright, curious grey eyes.
Emma's mother sat on the couch nearby, looking healthy, vibrant, and completely recovered, reading a fairytale book to the little girl.
Down on the grass lawn, Victor was playing with a golden retriever puppy, laughing freely as the dog chased a tennis ball across the grass.
He looked younger, relaxed, and entirely at peace—the dark scars of his past replaced by the deep warmth of a man who had found his true home.
Victor threw the ball one last time, then turned and walked up the porch steps toward his wife.
He sat on the arm of Emma's rocking chair, wrapping a heavy wool blanket around her shoulders before wrapping his large arm around her waist.
He leaned down, kissing the top of his baby daughter's head, then rested his cheek against Emma's.
"What are you thinking about?" Victor asked softly, watching the sun slowly dip below the ocean horizon.
Emma looked at him, leaning her head against his shoulder. "I was thinking about the first day I walked into your mansion."
Victor chuckled softly, a warm, rich sound. "You looked at me like you wanted to throw a bucket of water over my head."
"You were being an arrogant, insufferable jerk," Emma teased, poking his ribs playfully.
"I was a man hiding in the dark, Emma," Victor whispered softly, turning his head and looking deep into her hazel eyes. "Until a brave woman walked into my room and refused to let me stay there."
Emma reached up, her soft fingers gently touching the faint scar near his temple—the only reminder of a past that could no longer touch them.
"I didn't come to save a king, Victor," Emma whispered softly, kissing his lips tenderly. "I just came to take care of a man."

"And you gave him a kingdom," Victor murmured back, pulling her and their daughter tight against his heart as the stars began to twinkle in the clear night sky above.
Together, surrounded by love, security, and absolute peace, the Blackwood King and his queen looked out toward their future—a life forever whole, forever safe, and forever home.
