Chapter 8 - The Birth in the Storm

The storm outside raged with renewed fury, wind howling through the pine trees surrounding the Lake Geneva compound, but inside the third-floor medical suite, the world had shrunk to a single room filled with heat, sweat, and fierce determination.
Maddie lay on the delivery bed, her knuckles white as she crushed Dominic’s hand in her grip.
He had not left her side for a single second. His suit jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his broad palm gently cupping her sweat-dampened head as another massive contraction hit her body.
“Push, Madeline! Excellent! I see the head!” Dr. Evans shouted from the foot of the bed, supported by two estate nurses.
“I can’t... Dominic, I can’t do this!” Maddie cried out, tears streaming down her flushed face, her breathing ragged and shallow. “It hurts too much!”
Dominic leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, his warm breath fanning over her cheeks, his dark eyes holding hers with an intense, unyielding strength that anchored her through the agony.
“Look at me, sweetheart,” Dominic commanded softly, his voice deep and steady as a rock in an ocean. “Look at me. You are the strongest thing in my world. You survived Chicago, you survived Boston, you survived tonight. Give me our son, Maddie.”
He kissed her trembling lips with deep, fierce devotion.
“I’m right here. I’m holding you.”
Maddie let out a long, powerful cry, gathering every remaining ounce of life and love inside her soul, and pushed with all her strength.
At 2:14 AM, amidst the roar of the thunder outside, a sharp, loud, triumphant cry filled the room!
“He’s here!” Dr. Evans declared joyfully, holding up a healthy, squirming infant covered in a white towel. “A healthy, beautiful boy!”
Maddie collapsed back against the pillows, gasping for air, her chest heaving as tears of pure, overwhelming relief spilled over her lashes.
Dominic stood beside the bed, completely frozen.
The man who ruled Chicago’s underground with an iron fist, the man who had faced down hit squads and federal indictments without flinching, stood staring at his son with tears streaming down his face.
The nurse quickly cleaned the baby, wrapped him in a soft blue wool blanket, and handed him directly to Dominic.
Dominic held his son with terrifying care, his massive, scarred hands holding the tiny bundle as if he were made of fragile glass.
The baby opened his tiny eyes—dark, intelligent, intense eyes—and let out a small coo, his tiny fist reaching out to catch the cuff of Dominic’s linen shirt.
Dominic walked over to the bed, sitting down gently beside Maddie, placing their son carefully onto her chest.
Maddie wrapped her arms around the baby, crying soft, happy tears as she kissed the soft dark hair on his tiny head.
“He’s perfect,” she whispered.

Dominic leaned down, wrapping his arms around both of them, resting his forehead against Maddie’s temple, his eyes closed as he held his whole world in his arms.
“He’s a Valente,” Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “And his name is Leo.”
