Chapter 9 - The Settlement

Four weeks later.

Spring had arrived at Lake Geneva. The storm had passed, the snow had melted from the lake shore, and blooming green grass covered the hills surrounding the estate.

The damage from the attack had been fully repaired. The stone walls were stronger, the security team rebuilt, but the atmosphere inside the main house was vastly different.

There were no weapons visible in the living quarters. The air was filled with the soft scent of lavender, fresh baby powder, and the sound of classical music playing softly through the house speakers.

Maddie sat in a wicker chair on the sunny terrace overlooking the water, wearing a soft white sundress, holding four-week-old Leo against her shoulder as he slept quietly in the sunshine.

The heavy oak door opened.

Dominic walked out onto the terrace. He was wearing a simple dark blue shirt and jeans—looking younger, relaxed, and far removed from the mob boss who had stormed into her library four months ago.

He walked over, setting a small leather binder onto the table beside her, then leaned down to kiss her lips before placing his hand gently over baby Leo’s back.

“How is he?” Dominic asked softly.

“Fed, changed, and completely spoiled by your housekeeper,” Maddie smiled up at him.

Dominic sat in the chair beside her, leaning his elbows on his knees, looking at her with a serious, thoughtful expression.

“What’s in the binder?” Maddie asked, glancing at the leather folder.

Dominic reached over, opening the cover to reveal a thick stack of legal documents stamped with official court seals.

“It’s a full legal decree,” Dominic explained quietly. “I’ve transferred forty percent of Valente Global Logistics into a private trust under your name and Leo’s name. It’s clean, legitimate commercial real estate—ununtouchable by any syndicate debt or legal action.”

Maddie looked at the papers, then up at him in surprise. “Dominic...”

“That’s not all,” Dominic continued, taking her free hand in his. “I’ve signed a formal separation agreement from the Chicago board. My brother Julian is taking over the port operations. I’m stepping down as head of the family.”

Maddie’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at him, unable to believe what she was hearing.

“You’re leaving the syndicate?”

“I spent ten years building an empire because I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe,” Dominic said, his dark eyes searching hers with profound honesty. “The night Mateo DeLuca almost touched you in that bunker, I realized that my power was the very thing putting a target on your back.”

He lifted her hand, pressing his lips gently against her knuckles.

“I don't want an empire, Maddie. I want you. I want to watch my son grow up without wondering if every car behind us is a hit squad.”

Maddie looked down at their sleeping son, then back at the man who had hunted her across the country, locked her in a golden cage, and ultimately bled for her on a concrete floor.

The fear was gone. The anger had melted away.

All that remained was the deep, undeniable truth of what they had built together out of the ashes.

“You’re really staying here?” she asked softly.

“If you’ll have me,” Dominic whispered, his eyes filled with a rare, vulnerable hope. “Not as your warden, Maddie. As your husband.”

Maddie smiled, tears of quiet joy sparkling in her eyes as she reached out, running her fingers through his dark hair, pulling his face down to hers.

“You’re terrible at taking no for an answer, Dominic Valente,” she whispered against his lips.

“I know,” Dominic murmured, his mouth meeting hers in a soft, deep, passionate kiss that tasted of spring, water, and new beginnings. “That’s why you love me.”
