Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

"The chef who saved this menu tonight," John announced, his deep voice carrying through the silent hall, "is not a French master. She is Scott Hospitality’s new Quality Control Director—Evelyn Collins."
Gasps echoed through the front tables.
Several high-ranking staff members from the Halston Grand stared in open-mouthed shock. Tina, the floor supervisor who had called in sick two nights ago, was serving champagne at table four; she dropped her tray, her eyes bulging as she recognized the girl who had been scrubbing toilets twenty-four hours earlier.
David Sterling smiled broadly, raising his glass toward Evelyn. "Brava, Miss Collins! You have given this city something truly extraordinary!"
The ballroom erupted into thunderous applause.
As the crowd cheered, John turned to Evelyn. In front of three hundred elite guests, he reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a heavy velvet box.
The room grew quiet once more, surprised by the unexpected gesture.
John opened the box. Inside was not a ring, but a heavy gold seal ring embossed with the crest of Scott Hospitality, paired with a key crafted from solid silver.
"Twenty-four hours ago," John said, his eyes burning with an intense, unshakeable heat that made Evelyn's heart skip a beat, "I found you asleep on my bathroom floor because you were working yourself to death to survive."
He took the silver key and placed it directly into her palm, closing her fingers around it.
"This key belongs to the executive penthouse suite on the top floor of the Halston Grand. It is your new residence for as long as you work for me. And what I want to put in front of you tonight, Evelyn... is a choice."
Evelyn held her breath, the gold ring shimmering under the chandelier lights.
"Become my global partner," John said softly, his voice low enough that only she could hear over the hum of the crowd. "Not just a consultant. I am launching a new line of boutique culinary hotels across Europe. I want your palate, your honesty, and your mind at my side. Half the equity in the new venture belongs to you."
"John..." Evelyn whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "I'm just a girl from Albany Park."
"You are the most brilliant woman I have ever met," John replied softly, his fingers lingering on hers. "So... what is your answer?"

Before Evelyn could speak, a sharp, angry voice broke through the moment from the side aisle.
"She’s a fraud!"
