Chapter 7 - The Final Desperate Move

Jean-Luc Moreau pushed through the crowd of guests, his uniform disheveled, his eyes wild with desperation. Security guards tried to grab his arms, but he shoved them off, pointing a shaking finger at Evelyn.
"She’s a thief!" Moreau shouted to the entire room, his voice amplified by the room's acoustic design. "She stole my private recipe book from the test kitchen last night! That red wine reduction is my intellectual property! She lied to you, John! She sabotaged my station so she could take my job!"
The ballroom broke into hushed, shocked whispers. Investors exchanged nervous glances.
John stepped in front of Evelyn, his frame instantly shifting into a protective, lethal posture. "Security, escort Mr. Moreau out of the building immediately."
"Wait!" Evelyn said, placing a firm hand on John’s arm.
She stepped out from behind John, looking directly at Moreau in front of the crowd.
"Chef Moreau," Evelyn said calmly. "If that red wine reduction is your intellectual property, tell me what secret ingredient gives it its distinct velvet finish at the finish of the palate."
Moreau paused, his chest heaving. He panicked, pulling from standard French technique. "Monté au beurre! Cold butter and a dash of red wine vinegar!"
Evelyn shook her head slowly, a sad smile touching her lips. "Wrong. Cold butter breaks under high heat if the reduction contains that much acidity. My grandmother taught me that to smooth out a high-tannin Cabernet reduction without adding grease, you add a single tablespoon of rendered duck fat mixed with a drop of aged fig balsamico."
She turned to David Sterling at the head table. "Mr. Sterling, taste the sauce again. Tell me if you taste vinegar... or fig."
Sterling immediately dipped his spoon into the sauce, tasted it, and closed his eyes. "Fig," he declared loudly. "Distinct, subtle, and absolutely brilliant. There is no vinegar in this dish."
The crowd turned back to Moreau with looks of absolute disgust.

Moreau’s face drained of color. He looked around at the judging eyes of the city's elite, realizing his career in the culinary world was officially, permanently over.
Marcus, the head of hotel security, grabbed Moreau firmly by the collar and dragged him toward the service exits, leaving the ballroom in triumphant silence.
