Chapter 5 - THE STUDY

The executive study on the third floor of the townhouse was vast, lined with leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling mahogany shelves, and a massive antique desk situated in front of a crackling fireplace.

Alexander walked behind the desk, unlocked a small silver safe concealed behind a wooden panel, and extracted a thick, yellowed paper file.

Lena stood near the center of the room, her arms crossed defensively over her chest.

"Your father’s case was the first file I opened when I took over as CEO three years ago," Alexander said quietly, resting his hands on the desk.

Lena blinked, surprised. "What?"

"I knew my father’s administration had dark corners," Alexander explained, his voice low and serious. "The Vale merger in the early two-thousands was built on inflated asset values. Daniel Carter refused to sign the fraudulent valuation report. When he threatened to go to the SEC, the board fabricated a digital paper trail showing he had sold proprietary audit models to a competitor."

"He was innocent," Lena said, her eyes burning with angry tears. "He lived in poverty for twenty years because of your family!"

"I know," Alexander said simply.

He picked up the yellowed file and held it out to her.

Lena walked forward with hesitant steps, taking the file from his hands. She opened it. Inside were original internal memos, forensic email logs, and a signed statement from an independent investigator confirming that Daniel Carter had been framed by Harrison—her current supervisor at the firm.

Lena’s head snapped up. "Harrison?"

"Harrison was a junior compliance officer back then," Alexander said coldly. "He planted the fake files on your father’s computer in exchange for a promotion to senior vice president. I have been building a case against Harrison and three other board members for the past eighteen months, waiting for the right moment to purge them without destabilizing the firm’s stock."

Lena clutched the file against her chest, her knuckles turning white. "And you didn't tell anyone? You just kept my father’s exoneration locked in a safe while the man who ruined him sat in a corner office on the thirty-fourth floor?!"

"Corporate prosecution requires undeniable evidence, Miss Carter," Alexander said, stepping around the desk until he was standing directly in front of her. "If I had moved too early, Harrison’s lawyers would have destroyed the evidence. I needed the final paper trail from the Crestview acquisition—the same off-ledger entity you identified this morning."

Lena stared at him, realization dawning like a cold flash of lightning. "The off-ledger account... Harrison created it."

"Harrison was using Crestview to launder the remnants of the money stolen during the original Vale merger," Alexander confirmed. "You gave me the final piece of the puzzle today, Lena. Not because you were Daniel Carter’s daughter, but because you are as brilliant and meticulous as he was."

Lena looked up into Alexander’s dark blue eyes. The arrogant, cold billionaire she had met in the lobby felt entirely different now. Behind his stern, uncompromising demeanor lay a man who had been silently fighting his own war to rectify the sins of his family’s past.

"Why didn't you fire him today?" Lena asked softly.

"Because the board meeting is on Friday," Alexander replied, his voice dropping an octave. "I intend to strip Harrison of his position, freeze his assets, and hand him over to the federal authorities live in front of the entire shareholding council."

He reached out, his long fingers gently touching the corner of the file she held.

"And I want you standing beside me when I do it," Alexander added. "As the newly appointed Principal Analyst of Sterling & Vale."

Lena felt her breath catch in her throat. "Principal Analyst? I've been at the firm for six months—"

"You are qualified," Alexander interrupted smoothly. "You have integrity. And frankly, my mother would never forgive me if I let you go back to that drafty apartment in Queens."

Lena looked down at the file, then back up at Alexander. A small, resolute smile touched her lips.

"I accept the position," Lena said clearly. "On one condition."

Alexander raised an eyebrow, amused. "A condition?"

"You replace my broken space heater," Lena said, her hazel eyes sparkling with sudden mischief. "Because I'm not moving out of Queens until I see Harrison in handcuffs."

May you like

Alexander stared at her for a moment, then, for the very first time, a genuine, breathtaking smile broke across his face.

"Done, Miss Carter," Alexander murmured. "Consider it done."
