Chapter 8 - THE GATHERING

Saturday afternoon at the Sterling estate was bright, crisp, and filled with an unfamiliar sense of warmth.

The grand limestone townhouse, usually sterile and quiet, echoed with soft jazz music playing through hidden speakers.

In the rear conservatory—a massive glass structure filled with rare orchids, blooming jasmine, and comfortable velvet couches—Margaret sat in a wheelchair wrapped in a plush cashmere shawl.

Lena sat beside her, showing the older woman digital photos of her new office on her tablet.

"Oh, the view is spectacular!" Margaret clapped her hands together with delight. "Arthur—my late husband—always kept that corner office for his most trusted advisers. It belongs to you now, my dear."

"It still feels unreal, Margaret," Lena smiled, resting her hands in her lap. "A week ago, I was worried about having eighty-six dollars in my account."

"Money comes and goes, Lena," Margaret said gently, reaching over to pat her hand. "Character is what remains. You showed me character when you gave me your scarf on that cold sidewalk."

At that moment, Alexander walked into the conservatory carrying a silver tray with tea and fresh pastries. He was dressed casually in a dark cashmere sweater and trousers, looking relaxed and strikingly handsome.

"Mother, stop badgering my Principal Auditor," Alexander teased, setting the tray down on the low marble table. "She needs rest before Monday’s quarterly filing."

"I am not badgering her!" Margaret protested indignantly. "I am entertaining her! Which is more than I can say for you, standing around looking like an intimidating statue."

Lena chuckled into her teacup, watching the playful banter between mother and son.

Alexander sat down on the couch next to Lena, his shoulder lightly brushing against hers. The subtle contact sent a pleasant spark through Lena’s chest.

"I received a call from the District Attorney this morning," Alexander informed them, his tone turning businesslike. "Harrison has agreed to a plea deal. He is surrendering all his stock options and facing twelve years in federal prison."

Margaret sighed, a look of solemn relief settling over her features. "Good. Justice was delayed, but it was not denied."

"And the foundation?" Lena asked.

"The Daniel Carter Ethical Auditing Foundation is officially registered," Alexander said, pulling a leather folder from his jacket and handing it to Lena. "We have established an annual scholarship at Columbia Business School in your father’s name. The first recipient will be selected next month."

Lena opened the folder. Seeing her father’s name printed on official foundation letterhead brought a rush of emotion that made her throat tighten. Tears overflowed, spilling down her cheeks.

"Hey," Alexander whispered softly.

He reached out, his warm thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. His touch was incredibly tender, revealing a deep vulnerability that he hid from the rest of the world.

Margaret watched them with a quiet, knowing smile, taking a slow sip of her tea without saying a word.
