Chapter 6 - The Alliance

The revelation hung in the air between us like a cloud of poison.

Marco Moretti. The name alone brought back a flood of memories I had spent six years trying to drown: the sound of gunshots echoing through my family's home, the smell of copper and gunpowder, the terrifying face of a young Marco holding a smoking pistol and smiling as I hid behind the curtains of my father's study.

I slumped back into my chair, my strength completely drained. "He found me?"

"Not yet," Alessandro said, his tone surprisingly gentle as he reached out and took my cold, trembling hand in his. "He knows you are in the Midwest. He knows you were using the name Elizabeth Vance. But he doesn't know you are in Chicago, and he certainly doesn't know you are using the name Emma or living under my roof."

"If he finds out..." I choked out, looking up into Alessandro's amber eyes. "If he finds out I'm pregnant with your baby..."

"He won't," Alessandro promised, his grip on my hand tightening with fierce conviction. "Because I will tear his entire organization apart brick by brick before I let him lay a single finger on you or our child."

For the first time since he had dragged me out of the diner, I didn't see a captor. I saw a shield. A terrifying, lethal shield, but a shield nonetheless.

"Why didn't you tell me this at the diner?" I asked softly. "Why pull me out like a violent madman instead of just telling me I was in danger?"

Alessandro let out a quiet, self-deprecating sigh, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. "Because I am a man used to giving orders, Emma. I don't negotiate, and I don't explain myself to anyone. When my men told me about the pregnancy test, and my informants told me about Moretti's movement in the city, I panicked."

"You... panicked?" I repeated, almost incredulous. The great Alessandro Vitali, admitting to panic?

"I realized that the woman carrying my child was exposed, unprotected, and completely unaware of the wolves circling her," he said, looking deeply into my eyes. "I didn't have time to convince you. I just needed you behind my walls where I knew you would be breathing."

I stared at him for a long moment. The fear that had been consuming me for the last twelve hours began to shift, evolving into something far more complex. He was still a ruthless man, a man who ruled Chicago's underworld through fear and control. But he was also protecting me from the nightmare that had haunted my past.

"I need to talk to Liam," I said, my voice firmer now. "He doesn't know about Marco. He doesn't know about my past. He thinks I'm just a normal girl, and right now he's probably calling hospitals and police stations trying to find me."

Alessandro hesitated, his jaw tightening. "Liam Carter is a liability."

"He's my friend!" I insisted, standing up from the chair so I was eye-to-eye with him. "He took me in when I had nothing! He protected me in his own way for six years! If you don't let me call him and tell him I'm okay, I will never forgive you, Alessandro. I mean it."

Alessandro observed me, a faint glint of admiration flashing in his eyes at my sudden display of defiance. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his personal phone, unlocked it, and handed it to me.

"Two minutes," he said calmly. "Tell him you accepted a private, high-paying nursing position for an exclusive client out of state, and that you had to leave immediately. Do not mention my name, do not mention the baby, and do not mention Moretti."

I took the phone with shaking hands. "Thank you."

I dialed Liam's number from memory. He picked up on the first ring.

"Emma?!" Liam's voice exploded through the speaker, frantic and breathless. "Where the hell are you?! Sal called me and said some huge guy in a suit dragged you out of the diner! I'm at the police station right now—"

"Liam, stop! Listen to me!" I said quickly, turning away from Alessandro, though I could feel his heavy presence right behind me. "I'm okay. I swear I'm okay."

"Where are you? Who was that guy?"

"It's... it's a private client," I lied, sticking to the story Alessandro had given me, though my heart pained at deceiving him. "A high-net-worth family hired me for an exclusive, long-term care position. It was sudden, and the pay is enough to cover my tuition and all my debts. I had to leave immediately."

Silence fell over the line. "Emma... that sounds like complete bullshit," Liam said softly, his tone filled with deep suspicion. "Was it him? The guy from the hotel? The one you talked about?"

I froze. I hadn't told Liam everything about Alessandro, but I had admitted to him that I had met someone powerful at the Obsidian Hotel six weeks ago.

"Liam, please, just trust me," I pleaded, tears threatening to spill again. "I'm safe. Better than safe. I need you to pack up my things from the apartment and leave them at a storage unit. I'll send you money to pay off your lease. Just... stay out of this. For your own safety."

"Emma, if you're in trouble—"

"I have to go," I whispered. "I'll call you when I can. I love you, Liam. Thank you for everything."

I ended the call before he could argue further, handing the phone back to Alessandro.

He took it, his eyes searching my face. "Satisfied?"

"No," I murmured, crossing my arms. "But it's a start."

Alessandro walked over to the glass doors that led out to the dining room terrace, looking out at the dark, snow-dusted grounds of his estate.

"Tomorrow, Marco Moretti arrives in Chicago for a meeting with the Midwestern syndicates," Alessandro said quietly, his back turned to me. "He thinks he is coming to negotiate territory. He doesn't know that I know why he's really here."

"What are you going to do?" I asked, taking a step toward him.

May you like

Alessandro turned back to face me, his face illuminated by the warm light of the chandelier, his expression cold, lethal, and absolute.

"I am going to end the Moretti family once and for all," he said softly. "And then, Emma... you will never have to run again."
