Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The night air was freezing as the fleet of black SUVs rolled silently toward the industrial district near the shores of Lake Michigan.
I was sitting in the rear of the lead vehicle, wrapped in a heavy wool coat, my heart pounding like a war drum against my ribs. Alessandro had refused to let me come, but I had given him an ultimatum: either he let me wait in the armored command vehicle with his medical team half a mile away, or I would find a way to follow him myself.
He had grumbled, cursed in Italian, but ultimately surrendered to my stubbornness.
"Stay inside this car, Emma," Alessandro commanded, checking the silver automatic pistol he was tucking into his shoulder holster. He looked lethal, dressed in an all-black tactical suit, his face cold and unreadable. "No matter what you hear, no matter what happens, you do not open these doors until I come back for you."
I reached out, grabbing his sleeve. "Bring yourself back to me, Alessandro. Please."
He leaned down, pressing a firm, lingering kiss to my forehead. "Always."
He stepped out into the dark, cold night, flanked by twenty heavily armed men. They melted into the shadows of the surrounding abandoned warehouses, moving like silent ghosts toward the massive, rusting structure at the end of the pier.
I sat in the back of the armored SUV, staring at the monitors set up in the front console. Dr. Aris sat beside me, holding a emergency medical bag, while two guards kept watch outside.
Fifteen minutes passed in agonizing silence.
Then, the static on the comms radio burst to life.
“Don Alessandro, we have eyes on Marco Moretti. He has twelve men inside the central bay. They are armed with heavy automatic weapons.”
“Proceed as planned,” Alessandro’s low, steady voice came through the speaker. “Block the exits. Leave no one standing except Marco.”
Suddenly, the night erupted.
Muffled gunshots echoed across the water—the heavy thud-thud-thud of automatic rifles answered by the sharp, precise pop-pop-pop of suppressed pistols. Muzzle flashes illuminated the broken windows of the warehouse in strobing bursts of yellow and orange.
I covered my mouth, tears blurring my vision as I stared at the dark building. "Alessandro..."
The gunfire raged for three long, agonizing minutes, before gradually tapering off into sporadic shots, then complete, terrifying silence.
Static hissed through the radio.
“Status?” Alessandro’s voice cut through the noise, slightly breathless but clear.
“Building secure, Don. Moretti is alive, but disarmed. We have him secured in the main bay.”
I let out a massive sigh of relief, collapsing back against the seat. He was okay. It was over.
Suddenly, the driver's side window of our SUV shattered.
A deafening pop echoed through the night. The guard outside dropped to the pavement with a heavy thud.
Before Dr. Aris or I could scream, the rear doors of the armored vehicle were violently yanked open. A man in a dark tactical mask reached in, grabbed me by my coat collar, and dragged me out onto the icy pavement.
"Get your hands off her!" Dr. Aris screamed, trying to fight, but another gunman struck her with the butt of a rifle, knocking her unconscious onto the seat.
I kicked, bit, and screamed, but the man holding me was massive. He pinned my arms behind my back, pressing the cold, round muzzle of a handgun directly against my temple.
"Shut up, bitch, or I'll scatter your brains across the ice!" he growled in my ear.
From the shadows of a neighboring alleyway, a tall man stepped out into the moonlight. He wore a long leather coat, his face scarred, his eyes wild and unhinged.
Marco Moretti.
He laughed—a harsh, manic sound that sent a chill straight to my soul.
"Well, well, well," Marco sneered, walking slowly toward me. "Look what we have here. The ghost of Elizabeth Vance. My father spent three years looking for you, you little rat."
"Marco..." I gasped, trying to pull away from the gun at my head.
"Did you really think Vitali could hide you from me?" Marco sneered, reaching out to grab my hair, pulling my head back until I was forced to look at the dark night sky. "He thought he walked into my trap inside that warehouse. He didn't realize I left a secondary squad out here waiting for his prize."

He pulled a radio from his belt, clicking the button.
"Alessandro!" Marco yelled into the mic. "Stop looking for me inside, you bastard! I have your sweet little witness out here on the pier! Come out alone, or I put a bullet through her head right now!"
