Chapter 9 - The Sacrifice

Silence stretched across the cold, barren pier. The distant hum of city traffic felt like a world away, completely disconnected from the life-and-death nightmare unfolding in the shadows of the warehouses.

"Alessandro!" Marco shouted again, his grip on my hair tightening until tears of pain sprang to my eyes. "Five seconds, or I paint the pavement with her!"

Slowly, from the dark threshold of the main warehouse doors, a figure emerged.

Alessandro walked out alone into the moonlight. His gun was holstered, his hands held slightly out to his sides, his face an absolute mask of deadly calm. But as his amber eyes locked onto me, caught in the grip of Marco's gunman with a pistol to my head, I saw a flicker of pure, unadulterated hellfire ignite in his gaze.

"Let her go, Marco," Alessandro said, his voice flat, dangerously quiet, carrying effortlessly across the frozen air. "This is between you and me."

"It was between you and me, Vitali!" Marco screamed, his face contorting with rage. "Until you wiped out my father's business in New York! Until you put your hands on my father's killer's daughter!"

"She didn't kill your father," Alessandro said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward onto the icy asphalt. "Your father died of heart failure in a federal prison because he was weak. Just like you."

"Shut up!" Marco roared, snatching the pistol from his gunman's hand and pointing it directly at Alessandro's chest. "Take another step and I'll kill you both!"

"Alessandro, don't!" I screamed, struggling against the heavy arms holding me. "He's going to shoot you!"

"Quiet, Emma," Alessandro said softly, his eyes never leaving Marco. "Everything is going to be fine."

"She's carrying your blood, isn't she?" Marco sneered, a sick, twisted smile spreading across his scarred face. He stepped closer to me, lowering the gun from Alessandro and pointing it directly at my stomach. "I saw the way you looked at her when you walked out. She's carrying the Vitali heir. How poetic. I get to destroy your future and my father's past with a single bullet."

My blood ran completely cold. I instinctively twisted my body, wrapping my arms around my belly to shield my unborn child. "No! Please!"

Alessandro's calm facade shattered instantly.

"Marco!" Alessandro roared, a sound so terrifying it sounded like a dying beast. "Touch her and I will flay you alive!"

"Goodbye, Don Vitali," Marco laughed, his finger tightening on the trigger.

In that fraction of a second, three things happened at once.

Alessandro didn't draw his gun. He lunged forward with inhuman speed, throwing his own body directly into the line of fire between Marco's barrel and my stomach.

A deafening BANG shattered the night.

Alessandro gasped, the impact of the bullet catching him squarely in the side of his chest. He stumbled forward, but he didn't fall. Driven by pure, primal instinct, he closed the distance, grabbed Marco's gun hand, and twisted it with a sickening CRACK.

Marco shrieked in pain as his wrist shattered.

From the shadows behind Marco's gunman, two suppressed shots fired—POP-POP.

The man holding me collapsed instantly, a red hole in his forehead. I fell to my knees on the cold ice, gasping for air.

Alessandro didn't stop. With a roar of agony and rage, he slammed Marco onto the frozen pavement, mounting him, his large hands closing around Marco's throat.

"You... threatened... my... family," Alessandro snarled, his voice a low, terrifying rattle as he squeezed with every ounce of strength left in his bleeding body.

Marco thrusted his legs, his eyes bulging, his hands clawing uselessly at Alessandro's wrists. But Alessandro was an immovable wall of vengeance. He didn't stop until Marco's hands went limp, his eyes rolled back, and the last breath of life left his body.

The silence returned, heavy and absolute.

Alessandro collapsed sideways off Marco's body, falling onto his back against the red-stained ice.

"Alessandro!" I screamed, scrambling across the frozen ground on my hands and knees until I reached his side.

Blood was pooling rapidly beneath his dark jacket, soaking through his clothes at a terrifying rate. His face was ghostly pale, his breath coming in short, agonizing hitches.

"Emma..." he whispered, his trembling hand reaching up to touch my face. "Are you... are you hurt? The baby..."

"We're fine! We're okay!" I sobbed, pressing my hands hard against his bleeding chest wound, trying desperately to stem the flow of red. "You idiot! You jumped in front of a bullet!"

"I told you..." he choked out, a faint, bloody smile touching his lips as his amber eyes began to flutter shut. "I will always... protect... what belongs to me..."

"Stay with me, Alessandro! Open your eyes!" I screamed, tears streaming down my face as his head rolled to the side. "Don't you dare leave me! I love you! Do you hear me?! I love you!"

From the shadows, Alessandro's men burst out onto the pier, shouting for medics, but their voices sounded a million miles away as I pulled Alessandro's limp, bleeding body into my arms, weeping into the dark night.
