Chapter 5 - The Fourth Floor

The fourth floor of St. Jude’s Hospital was wrapped in an eerie, artificial stillness.
The fluorescent lights overhead flickered rhythmically, casting long, pale shadows across the linoleum floor. The air smelled of bleach, rubbing alcohol, and old paper.
Adrian walked down the corridor with absolute confidence, his long strides silent, his right hand resting inside his black jacket. Clara hurried behind him, her eyes darting nervously toward every closed door and dark nurse’s station.
"Where are the nurses?" Clara whispered, her voice barely audible.
"Paid off or sent home early," Adrian replied smoothly. "Moretti cleared the floor."
They rounded the corner toward Room 412.
Standing outside the door were four tall men in matching dark suits. One of them held a leather medical bag; the other three had their hands tucked deeply into their coat pockets, their shoulders hunched in tense expectation.
When they saw Adrian and Clara approaching, all four men froze.
The leader—a stocky man with a broken nose and a thick scar running across his chin—stepped forward, placing his hand over his coat pocket.
"This floor is restricted, friend," the stocky man said in a low, gravelly voice. "Visiting hours ended at eight."
"I don't keep visiting hours, Frankie," Adrian said calmly, continuing to walk toward them without slowing down.
Frankie’s eyes widened as he recognized Adrian’s face under the harsh fluorescent lights. "Marchetti? What the hell are you doing here?"
"I’m here to collect my employee’s brother," Adrian said, stopping ten feet from the group. "And to collect the men who entered this building without my permission."
Frankie let out a harsh, dry laugh. "This isn't your territory, Marchetti. Pier 4 belongs to Moretti now. The clerk inside that room is a dead man walking."
"He was," Adrian agreed. "Until five minutes ago."
Before Frankie could react, the heavy double doors at the far end of the hallway burst open.
Four men dressed in tactical black gear, armed with short-barreled carbines, flooded into the corridor. At their head was Marco—a broad-shouldered man with a scarred jaw and a cold, military posture.
"Drop your weapons!" Marco roared, raising his carbine. "Hands on the wall! NOW!"
The four Moretti men spun around in shock, realizing they were completely surrounded.
Frankie looked back at Adrian, his teeth bared in a desperate rage. He reached rapidly into his jacket for his weapon.
Adrian didn't hesitate.
In one fluid motion, he drew his pistol and fired a single shot.
BANG.
The sound was deafening in the narrow corridor.
Frankie screamed, dropping his gun as the bullet tore through his shoulder, sending him staggering back against the wall, smearing blood down the beige wallpaper.
The other three men immediately threw their hands into the air, dropping their weapons onto the floor with loud metallic clatters.
"Clear the hall," Adrian ordered Marco calmly, stepping past the bleeding man without giving him a second glance.
"Yes, boss," Marco replied, moving forward with his team to disarm and secure the Remaining men.
Adrian reached the door of Room 412, turned the handle, and pushed it open.
Clara rushed past him into the room.
"Evan!" she cried.
The room was quiet, lit only by the soft blue monitors humming beside the high hospital bed.
Lying in the center of the bed was a young man with pale skin, dark hair, and an oxygen mask strapped over his face. Wires connected his chest to a wall of medical equipment, his heart beating in a slow, steady rhythm on the monitor screen.
Beep... beep... beep...
Clara fell to her knees beside the bed, grabbing Evan’s thin, limp hand and pressing it against her face, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Evan... oh God, Evan, you're okay," she sobbed. "You're safe now."
Adrian stepped into the room, closing the heavy wooden door behind him, locking out the noise of the hallway. He stood near the foot of the bed, his dark eyes observing the young man on the mattress.
Slowly, the eyelids of the boy on the bed fluttered.
Evan turned his head slightly, his weak, pale eyes opening under the harsh light of the monitors. He looked at Clara, then his gaze moved past her, settling on the tall man standing in black at the end of his bed.
Evan’s lips moved beneath the plastic oxygen mask.
"Marchetti..." Evan whispered, his voice barely a rasp.
Adrian took a step closer, leaning over the footboard.
"Rest, son," Adrian said, his tone lower and gentler than Clara had ever heard it before. "The people who did this to you are finished. You and your sister are under my protection now."
Evan stared at Adrian for three long seconds, then let out a slow, exhausted breath, his eyes closing as he fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Clara looked up at Adrian through her tears, her heart pounding with a strange, overwhelming emotion she couldn't name.
"Thank you," she whispered from the floor. "Thank you, Mr. Marchetti."
May you like
Adrian looked down at her, his face dark, handsome, and resolute in the pale blue light of the monitors.
"Call me Adrian," he said softly. "Because tomorrow, Clara, we start a war."
