Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later.

The afternoon sun streamed through the high floor-to-ceiling windows of the newly renovated garden conservatory at the Marchetti estate, illuminating pots of blooming white lilies, sweet jasmine, and vibrant red roses.

Clara stood by the grand glass doors, dressed in an elegant ivory silk dress, watching two men sitting at a wrought-iron table on the sunny terrace outside.

One was her brother, Evan. He looked healthy, his cheeks full of color, wearing a sharp blue blazer, laughing as he reviewed a set of architectural blueprints for a new youth shelter he was managing in downtown Chicago—a project fully funded by the Marchetti Foundation.

Sitting across from him was Adrian.

He looked relaxed, his dark hair catching the sunlight, holding a cup of espresso, listening attentively as Evan explained the building plans. The gun beneath his jacket was gone today, replaced by the quiet, unyielding authority of a man who had secured total peace for his home and his family.

Clara smiled, a deep, profound sense of contentment settling over her soul.

The sound of soft footsteps approached from behind.

Marco stepped into the conservatory, wearing a tailored black suit, carrying a leather document folder under his arm.

"Miss Bennett," Marco said politely, bowing his head slightly. "The final deeds for the St. Jude’s Children's Wing have been prepared. They only require your signature as the lead trustee."

"Thank you, Marco," Clara said warmly, taking the pen and signing her name smoothly across the bottom of the parchment. "Has there been any word from Colorado?"

"Dominic's appeal was rejected this morning," Marco replied with a faint, satisfied smirk. "He will be spending the next thirty years in solitary confinement."

"Good," Clara said, handing the folder back.

Marco bowed again and walked quietly out of the room.

Outside on the terrace, Adrian looked up, catching Clara’s eye through the glass doors. He said something to Evan, stood up from the table, and walked inside the conservatory.

He wrapped his arms around Clara’s waist from behind, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" Adrian murmured against her ear, his breath warm and comforting.

"I was thinking about six months ago," Clara said softly, turning her head to kiss his cheek. "About midnight. About sitting on the cold marble outside the kitchen, thinking my life was over."

Adrian’s arms tightened around her, holding her close.

"And now?" he asked.

Clara looked out at the bright green lawn, at her brother laughing in the sunshine, and then up at the handsome, fierce man who had given up everything to keep her safe.

"Now," Clara whispered, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face, "I know that I am right where I was always meant to be."
