Chapter 6 - The Safehouse on the Lake

The morning sun rose over Lake Michigan like a pale silver coin, casting long rays of light across the quiet water.

Located twenty miles north of the city, hidden deep within a thick forest of pine trees, was the Marchetti family's private retreat—a sprawling, fortified estate built from dark timber and reinforced concrete.

A private ambulance had transported Evan here under the cover of dawn, accompanied by two independent neurosurgeons whom Adrian had personally flown in from Johns Hopkins.

Clara stood on the wide wooden balcony of the second-story guest suite, wearing a warm cashmere sweater that one of the estate housekeepers had provided for her. A mug of hot tea steamed in her hands, but she hadn't taken a sip.

Below her, four armed security guards walked the perimeter fence, their sharp eyes scanning the treeline.

"He's stable," a deep voice said from the doorway behind her.

Clara turned. Adrian stood there, holding two leather folders in his hands. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his black jacket gone, revealing the intricate black tattoos that wrapped around his left forearm—designs of scales, wolves, and old Italian family crests.

"The doctors said his brain swelling has reduced by forty percent," Adrian continued, walking onto the balcony to stand beside her at the railing. "They expect him to be fully conscious within forty-eight hours."

Clara let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for two days. "I don't know how I will ever repay you for this, Adrian. The medical bills alone—"

"I don't want your money, Clara," Adrian interrupted gently, looking out at the gray lake. "I have more money than I could spend in three lifetimes."

"Then what do you want?" she asked softly, looking up at his sharp profile.

Adrian turned to look at her. The morning light caught the amber flecks in his dark brown eyes.

"I want the truth about Pier 4," he said. "Julian wasn't acting alone. He was working with someone inside my own inner council. Someone who authorized the weapons shipment using my personal seal."

He opened one of the leather folders he was holding and handed a single piece of paper to her.

It was a bill of lading for six shipping containers, stamped with a heavy red wax seal bearing the Marchetti family crest—a crowned wolf standing over a broken sword.

"Do you recognize that seal?" Adrian asked.

Clara stared at the paper. "I... I’ve seen that seal before."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "Where?"

"In your private study," Clara said, her brow furrowing as she searched her memory. "Three weeks ago, when I was dusting the bookshelf behind your desk. There was a metal box in the floor safe. A man was standing there while you were in the bathroom."

Adrian’s entire body stiffened. "Which man?"

"Your cousin," Clara said quietly. "Dominic Marchetti."

Silence fell over the balcony, heavy and sudden. The only sound was the distant caw of a seagull flying over the lake.

Adrian’s jaw worked slowly. He reached out and gripped the wooden railing until the timber creaked under the pressure of his hands.

"Dominic," Adrian whispered, the word laced with a cold, poisonous venom.

"He had a small silver key," Clara added, her memory growing clearer. "He opened the box, stamped four papers, and put the seal back before you came out of the bathroom. I thought... I thought he was just doing work for you."

Adrian let out a short, dark laugh that contained no humor at all.

"Dominic has been trying to take control of the harbor logistics for three years," Adrian said, turning back to face the lake. "He used Julian to orchestrate the shipment, used the Morettis as a distraction, and tried to frame me for the federal investigation."

He looked at Clara, his eyes burning with an intense, fierce light.

"You didn't just save your brother, Clara," Adrian said softly, reaching out and brushing a stray strand of dark hair away from her cheek. "You just handed me the piece I needed to destroy my enemies."

Clara’s heart did a strange, violent flip in her chest at the touch of his fingers against her skin. She didn't pull away.

"What are you going to do?" she asked softly.

May you like

Adrian dropped his hand, his expression hardening into absolute steel.

"I'm calling a meeting of the Marchetti Syndicate council for eight o'clock tonight," he said. "And Dominic is going to take his seat at the table."
