Chapter 10 - THE LAST KISS

One month later.
The city was quiet. The Maroni syndicate was entirely dissolved, its leadership imprisoned or vanished, its assets seized or absorbed into Ravi’s legal holdings. The war that had threatened to consume the underworld was over.
It was a warm, bright afternoon in late May.
Diane stood on the expansive private terrace of the Sovereign Tower, looking out over the clear blue waters of the harbor.
She wore a simple, elegant white summer dress—a far cry from the heavy black silk gowns she had worn during the war.
Behind her, the door opened, and Sadi came running out onto the terrace, wearing a bright yellow sundress, her smile wide and perfect—showing off her newly straightened teeth, courtesy of the top orthodontic team in the country.
"Diane! Look!" Sadi cheered, holding up a sketchbook filled with colorful drawings of the city skyline. "Ravi said I can take art lessons at the academy next month!"
Diane smiled, kneeling down and adjusting her sister’s hair. "That's wonderful, sweetie. Why don't you go inside and show Victor? He’s waiting in the kitchen with pastries."
"Yay!" Sadi shouted, hugging Diane briefly before racing back inside the penthouse.
Diane stood up, turning to face the man who was standing near the terrace railing.
Ravi was dressed in a casual charcoal shirt, his hands in his pockets, watching her with those intense, amber eyes that no longer frightened her in the slightest.
Between them, resting on the glass patio table, was an open leather folder.
The six-month contract.
"Your sister is completely safe now, Diane," Ravi said softly, his voice carrying over the warm summer breeze. "The Maroni family is gone. The trust fund for Sadi is fully endowed. The five million dollars has been transferred to an offshore account in your name."
He looked down at the contract, then back up at her face.
"Our agreement is fulfilled. You are free to take Sadi and leave this city today. Fresh identities, a fresh start, anywhere in the world."
Diane walked slowly toward the table. She picked up the contract—the document that had bound her to the most dangerous man in the city six months ago out of pure desperation.
She looked at the pages, then slowly, deliberately, she tore the contract in half.
Then she tore it in half again, letting the white paper scraps flutter out of her fingers and float down into the breeze over the seventy-story drop.
Ravi’s eyes widened slightly—the first time she had seen him genuinely surprised in six months.
"What are you doing?" he asked softly.
Diane walked right up to him, stopping three inches from his chest. She reached up, placing her hands gently against the warm, solid planes of his cheeks.
"Six months ago, I kissed you for ten thousand dollars to save my sister," Diane whispered, looking deep into his amber eyes. "I thought you were a monster."
Ravi’s jaw tightened slightly. "And now?"
Diane smiled—a warm, radiant smile that lit up her entire face.
"Now I know you're the man who saved my family. The man who protected me when no one else would. And I don't need a contract to stay where I belong."
Before Ravi could answer, Diane leaned upward, pressing her lips against his.
It wasn't like the kiss in the ballroom six months ago—it wasn't fast, desperate, or filled with panic.
It was slow, deep, and filled with an absolute, unyielding devotion that made the rest of the world vanish entirely.
Ravi’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her flush against his body, holding her as if she were the only precious thing left in a world of dark shadows.
When they finally pulled apart, Ravi looked down at her, a rare, beautiful warmth filling his amber eyes.
"You still didn't ask for permission, Diane," he murmured softly, a dry, affectionate wit touching his voice.
May you like
Diane laughed, resting her forehead against his chest, listening to the steady beat of the heart that belonged entirely to her.
"Try to punish me, Ravi," she whispered. "I'm not going anywhere."
