Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER OF TREASON

The success of the Harbor Gala cemented Diane’s position at Ravi’s side, but it also painted a massive, glowing target on her back.

Over the next three weeks, the city media went wild. Tabloids ran front-page headlines about the "Mysterious Dark Queen" who had tamed the city’s most feared crime boss. High-end fashion houses sent racks of unreleased dresses to the penthouse, begging her to wear their designs to public appearances.

To the outside world, Diane was living a fairy tale.

Inside the penthouse, however, the atmosphere grew increasingly tense.

Ravi was working eighteen hours a day. The Maroni family, humiliated at the gala, was launching silent attacks against Ravi’s supply chains—hijacking shipments at the harbor, bribing customs officials, and attempting to turn his lieutenants.

One evening at midnight, Diane woke to the sound of hushed, angry voices coming from Ravi’s glass-walled study.

She slipped out of bed, wrapping a black silk robe around herself, and crept quietly down the carpeted hallway.

Through the crack in the double doors, she saw Ravi standing behind his desk. Victor was standing opposite him, along with Julian—Ravi’s chief financial officer, a polished man in his late thirties who had managed the organization’s legal assets for a decade.

"The numbers don't lie, Boss," Julian was saying, holding up a tablet. "The Maronis knew the exact coordinates of the shipment arriving at Pier 42 last night. They had two tugboats waiting to intercept it before our men even cleared customs."

Ravi’s face was dark, shadowed by the faint light of the desk lamp. "There is a mole in this office."

"It has to be someone with top-level security clearance," Victor agreed, his hand resting heavy on his belt. "Only four people knew the Pier 42 timetable. You, me, Julian... and Miss Harper."

Diane felt her heart drop into her stomach like a lead weight.

She took a step back from the door, but her shoe caught the edge of a decorative brass floor vase.

CLANG.

The sound echoed sharply through the quiet hallway.

Instantly, the study door flew open. Victor emerged with a suppressed pistol drawn, his eyes sweeping the hallway before locking onto Diane standing in the shadows.

"Diane," Ravi’s voice called out from inside the room. "Step inside."

Diane walked into the study, her hands folded tightly in the sleeves of her robe, her head held high despite the panic surging through her veins.

Julian looked at her with a cool, accusatory smirk. "How convenient. Listening at doors late at night, Miss Harper?"

"I heard voices," Diane said firmly, looking directly into Ravi’s eyes, ignoring Julian entirely. "I didn't leak anything to the Maronis, Ravi. I don't even know what was on those ships."

Julian scoffed. "You were a broke waitress four weeks ago, Miss Harper. Your sister’s entire life was funded overnight by Mr. Greedy’s accounts. How do we know the Maronis didn't offer you ten million dollars to pass along a few shipping manifests?"

"Julian," Ravi said. His voice wasn't loud, but it contained enough authority to instantly shut the financial officer down.

Ravi walked slowly around the desk, stopping two feet from Diane. He reached out, his long fingers gently raising her chin so she was forced to look directly into his eyes.

He searched her face for five agonizing seconds—looking for fear, looking for deceit, looking for any sign of betrayal.

Diane didn't blink. She let him see everything—her anger, her pride, her fierce, unwavering loyalty to him.

Slowly, Ravi lowered his hand.

"It wasn't Diane," Ravi said flatly, turning his back on Julian.

Julian looked stunned. "Boss, with all due respect, you're letting sentimentality cloud your judgment! She’s an outsider!"

"I said it wasn't her," Ravi repeated, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper as he turned back to Julian. "Because the Pier 42 timetable was modified three hours before the ship arrived. Only two people had the updated encryption key. Me... and you, Julian."

Julian’s face drained of all color in an instant.

He took a frantic step backward toward the balcony doors, his hand diving into his jacket pocket.

Before he could draw a weapon, Victor moved with blinding speed, stepping behind Julian, kicking his knee out, and driving his face down onto the hard marble floor with a sickening CRACK.

"Search him," Ravi ordered coldly.

Victor reached into Julian’s pocket, pulling out a small, encrypted burner phone. The screen was still glowing with an active text message sent ten minutes prior to an unlisted number registered in Palermo.

THE PACKAGE IS IN THE STUDY.

Julian wept against the stone floor, his nose bleeding onto the marble. "Ravi... please... they have my family... Matteo threatened my children..."

Ravi didn't look down at the groveling man. He looked at Victor.

"Take him to the warehouse. Deal with it quietly."

Victor dragged the weeping traitor out of the room, shutting the heavy oak doors behind them.

The study fell completely silent once more.

Diane stood near the desk, her breathing shallow, her body shaking slightly from the sudden adrenaline dump.

Ravi walked over to her. He didn't say a word. He simply reached out, took her shaking hand into his large, warm palm, and pulled her gently against his chest.

Diane buried her face in the hollow of his shoulder, her arms wrapping around his waist, feeling the deep, steady beat of his heart through his linen shirt.

"You trusted me," she whispered into his chest.

"I know a survivor when I see one, Diane," Ravi murmured, his lips lightly brushing the crown of her head. "Survivors don't betray the people who keep them safe."
