Chapter 4 - The Cathedral of Shadows

The Cathedral of St. Jude sat in the heart of the downtown district, its massive Gothic spires stretching toward the gray, overcast sky. Historically neutral ground for the city's ruling families, the cathedral was where treaties were signed, truces were honored, and blood was strictly forbidden under threat of collective execution by the underworld council.
At 11:55 AM, a convoy of five black armored SUVs pulled up to the stone steps of the church.
Nikolai stepped out of the center vehicle, wearing a pristine charcoal suit. He turned and extended his hand into the back seat, helping Iris step onto the pavement. She was dressed in a simple, elegant dark navy dress that concealed the early stage of her pregnancy, her hair pulled back into a neat knot.
"Keep your hand in mine," Nikolai instructed in a low whisper as they walked up the stone steps. "No matter what Celeste says, no matter how she provokes you, do not let go."
"I’m not afraid of her, Nikolai," Iris said, her voice remarkably calm. Fear had consumed her during the long, sleepless night at the estate, but by morning, a quiet, fierce instinct had taken its place. She was protecting her baby now.
Inside the cathedral, the light was filtered through towering stained-glass windows, casting deep crimson and violet shadows across the long central aisle.
Sitting in the front pew, wearing an exquisite ivory designer dress that had been tailored for a wedding that would never happen, was Celeste Renard. Beside her stood her father, Hector Renard—a frail-looking old man with silver hair, cold blue eyes, and a oxygen tube resting under his nose, flanked by ten heavily armed bodyguards.
"Nikolai," Celeste said, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. She stood up, her movement fluid, graceful, and deadly. She turned to face them, her eyes locking onto Iris with pure, unadulterated venom. "You brought your little gardener."
"Speak quickly, Celeste," Nikolai said, stopping twenty feet down the aisle, his hand gripping Iris’s firmly. "You asked for a meeting on neutral ground. I am here."
"I asked for an explanation!" Celeste shouted, her composure cracking, revealing the wild, unhinged rage beneath her aristocratic exterior. "I spent three years preparing to be the Queen of the Voss Syndicate! I humiliated myself in front of every major family on the East Coast today because you left me at the altar for a woman who smells like dirt and cheap fertilizer!"
"Watch your mouth, Celeste," Nikolai warned, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal threat.
Hector Renard stepped forward, leaning heavily on his carved mahogany cane. "Is it true, Nikolai? Does this common girl carry a Voss heir?"
"She carries my child," Nikolai declared clearly, his voice resounding through the sacred hall. "And she is my wife in every way that matters. The alliance with the Renard family is officially terminated. We will honor the existing commercial boundaries, but there will be no marriage."
Celeste laughed—a sharp, hysterical sound that rang chillingly against the stone walls. She reached into her lace handbag, pulling out a small, sleek velvet box.
"A child," Celeste sneered, stepping closer down the aisle. "You destroyed our family's honor for a bastard child. Do you know what my father does to traitors, Nikolai? He eliminates their bloodline."
Before Nikolai’s bodyguards could react, Celeste opened the velvet box, exposing a small glass vial filled with a clear, volatile chemical.
"This is concentrated ricin," Celeste hissed, her eyes wild. "A single drop on her skin, and your precious little heir will stop breathing within six hours. No doctor will find it. No lab will trace it."
Nikolai instantly shifted his body, placing himself entirely in front of Iris, his hand reaching inside his suit jacket for his custom silver pistol.
"Touch her," Nikolai whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger, "and I will execute every person who carries the name Renard before the sun sets today."
"Wait," Iris’s voice cut through the tension.
She stepped out from behind Nikolai’s shoulder, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on his arm, forcing him to lower his gun slightly. She walked two steps forward, looking directly into Celeste’s furious eyes.
"You think you lost something today, Celeste?" Iris asked softly, her voice steady and clear. "You didn't lose a husband. You lost a jailer. Look at him." She gestured toward Nikolai. "He doesn't love you. He never loved you. You would have spent the rest of your life sitting in a cold stone house, waiting for a man who looked at you like an asset on a balance sheet."
Celeste blinked, caught off guard by the total lack of fear in Iris’s eyes.
"I am carrying his child," Iris continued, placing her hand over her stomach. "Not because I wanted his money, or his power, or his Syndicate. I didn't even know his last name when this baby was made. I loved him when he was just a wet, exhausted man standing in my flower shop during a thunderstorm. Can you say you ever cared about him for even a single second?"
Celeste’s hand trembled over the velvet box. The bitter truth of Iris’s words pierced through her pride like a dagger.
"Put the box away, Celeste," Hector Renard growled, his raspy voice breaking the silence. He raised his cane, signaling his bodyguards to stand down. "The girl is right. The Voss boy’s heart was never in this treaty. A forced union would have brought a war into our house within five years anyway."

Celeste looked at her father, tears of rage brimming in her eyes, before slamming the velvet box shut and tossing it to the ground.
"This isn't over, Nikolai," Celeste whispered, her voice laced with absolute malice. "You might have saved her today. But the Syndicate won't accept a nobody as their matriarch. Your own captains will tear you apart."
