Chapter 8 - The Matriarch's Rise

By the arrival of spring, the city of New Haven had completely transformed.

The war was over. The Voss Syndicate held absolute, unchallenged authority over the entire region's commercial and shipping networks. But the biggest change was not the territory—it was the house itself.

Iris was now eight months pregnant.

She no longer hid in the background of the estate. She sat at the head of the financial council alongside Nikolai every Tuesday morning, managing the Syndicate’s legitimate commercial investments, real estate development projects, and charitable foundations. Her brilliant strategic mind—honed by years of managing a small business under tough economic conditions—had streamlined the family's legal operations, generating record profits while reducing their criminal exposure by half.

The captains who had once called her a "dirty florist" now stood when she entered the room, addressing her with profound respect as Donna Iris.

On a warm afternoon in April, Iris returned to the downtown district for the first time in months.

A sleek black limousine pulled up to the curb on Elm Street, stopping directly in front of a small, familiar storefront with a painted glass sign: Bloom & Stem.

Iris stepped out of the vehicle, wearing a beautiful beige maternity coat, her hand resting over her prominently rounded stomach. She was accompanied by two discreet bodyguards who stood near the entrance as she pushed open the front door.

The brass bell chimed softly above her head—the exact same sound she had heard a year ago on that rainy night.

Behind the wooden counter, trimming the stems of deep red roses, was Camille.

Camille looked up, dropping her floral scissors in shock. "Iris?!"

"Hi, Cami," Iris smiled warmly, stepping inside the shop.

Camille rushed out from behind the counter, wrapping her arms carefully around Iris, mindful of her large baby bump. "Oh my gosh! Look at you! You look absolutely radiant!"

"I feel good," Iris laughed, stepping back to look around the shop. The shelves were filled with fresh blooms, the air smelled of sweet eucalyptus and damp earth, and everything was arranged meticulously just as she had left it. "You’ve done an incredible job keeping the place running, Cami."

"It's your shop, Iris," Camille said softly, taking her hands. "I'm just holding down the fort until you come back."

"I'm not coming back to work here, Cami," Iris revealed with a gentle smile. "I came to sign the shop over to you. The deed is officially in your name as of this morning."

Camille’s eyes went wide, her jaw dropping. "What?! Iris, no! This was your dream! Your mother’s legacy!"

"My mother’s legacy was teaching me how to grow beautiful things in hard soil," Iris said softly, placing her hand over her baby. "I'm growing something else now. But I want Bloom & Stem to stay open. I want it to belong to the person who cared for it when I couldn't."

Camille burst into tears, throwing her arms around Iris again, whispering endless thank-yous into her hair.

Suddenly, the front door bell chimed again.

Iris turned around.

Standing in the doorway, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit without a tie, his hands in his pockets, was Nikolai. He looked relaxed, powerful, and deeply at peace as he watched his wife from the entrance.

"Is the flower business officially closed, Donna Iris?" Nikolai asked smoothly, a rare, breathtaking smile touching his handsome face.

"It is, Don Voss," Iris replied, walking toward him, placing her hand into his open palm. "Take me home. Your heir is kicking."
