Chapter 9 - The Birth of an Empire

The rain fell softly against the glass roof of the greenhouse on a cool May evening.
Inside the master suite of the Voss estate, the atmosphere was tense, chaotic, and filled with urgent whispers. Three private obstetricians and two senior nurses rushed back and forth across the room, adjusting medical equipment, monitoring heart rates, and preparing the sterile delivery field.
Iris lay on the grand bed, her hair soaked with sweat, her knuckles white as she gripped Nikolai’s hand with terrifying force.
"Focus, Iris," Nikolai whispered furiously beside her, kneeling on the floor, his other hand smoothing the wet hair from her forehead. He looked more terrified in that moment than he had ever looked while facing eighty armed enemies. "Look at me. Only at me."
"Nikolai... it hurts..." Iris gasped, a violent contraction ripping through her body, forcing a pained scream from her lips.
"I know, my love, I know," Nikolai soothed, kissing her knuckles repeatedly, his own eyes brimming with rare, uncharacteristic tears. "You are the strongest woman in this world. You survived my enemies, you survived my world, you can do this."
"Push, Mrs. Voss! Push now!" the lead doctor instructed firmly.
Iris squeezed Nikolai’s hand so hard she nearly cracked his fingers, throwing her head back against the pillows, letting out a raw, powerful cry that echoed through the vast stone walls of the mansion.
And then, the sound filled the room.
A sharp, clear, indignant cry—a tiny voice declaring its arrival into the world.
The room went completely still for a fraction of a second before the lead doctor wrapped the infant in a warm white blanket, smiling broadly as he turned toward the bed.
"It’s a boy," the doctor announced softly, laying the crying child directly onto Iris’s chest. "A healthy, strong baby boy."
Iris collapsed back against the pillows, her chest heaving, tears of pure, overwhelming joy streaming down her face as she looked down at the tiny, perfect creature resting against her skin. He had a tuft of thick black hair, dark eyes that were already open, and tiny fingers that immediately reached out, grasping the edge of Iris’s gown.
Nikolai froze.
The ruthless king of the underworld, the man who had brought the entire city to its knees, stared down at his son with absolute, breathless awe. His shoulders shook slightly as a single, quiet sob escaped his chest.
He reached out with a long, trembling finger, gently touching the baby’s tiny cheek.
The infant’s small hand let go of the gown and wrapped his tiny fingers firmly around Nikolai’s thumb.
"Look at him, Nikolai," Iris whispered, her voice weak but radiating with profound love. "He has your hair. He has your stubborn grip."
Nikolai leaned down, pressing his forehead gently against Iris’s, his tears dropping onto her cheek, mingling with her own.
"He has your heart, Iris," Nikolai choked out, his voice thick with emotion. "He has your light."
Outside the bedroom door, the hallway was lined with twenty senior captains and soldiers of the Voss Syndicate.
When Viktor stepped out into the corridor, closing the door softly behind him, he looked at the assembled men and offered a single, dignified nod.

"The Don has an heir," Viktor announced clearly.
A loud, unanimous cheer erupted down the long hallway, echoing through the grand stone fortress—a declaration that the legacy of the Voss family was secure, protected by the strength of its Don, and guided by the grace of its Matriarch.
