Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Light

One year later.
The summer sun shone bright over the green hills of a private ten-acre estate in Somerset County, New Jersey.
The main house was a beautiful historic stone manor surrounded by blooming flower gardens, ancient oak trees, and a grand glass greenhouse filled with white roses.
Sitting on a wide wooden bench on the rear terrace was Edwin Whitaker—a healthy, chubby three-month-old baby boy with dark hair and wide, bright grey eyes—gurgling happily in his white cotton jumpsuit.
Nora sat beside the stroller, wearing a floral summer dress, laughing as she handed a wooden rattle to her son. Her mother, Mrs. Whitaker, sat nearby in a comfortable wicker chair, watching her grandson with a radiant smile.
From the garden path, Damian walked up the stone steps, wearing a simple linen shirt and trousers, carrying a large silver tray filled with iced tea and fresh tartlets.
He set the tray on the outdoor table, walking over to the stroller, lifting his son into his broad arms with gentle, practiced ease.
Baby Edwin giggled, reaching his tiny hands up to grab Damian's nose.
"He has your chin, Damian," Mrs. Whitaker said with a soft smile.
"God help him then," Damian chuckled softly, kissing his son’s cheek before handing him back to Nora.
Damian sat beside his wife on the wooden bench, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her comfortably against his side.
In the distance, past the green lawns, the iron gates of the estate sat open and quiet under the blue sky. The world of debt, violence, and criminal feuds had been pushed far beyond those gates, replaced by an empire built on legitimate transport, real estate, and love.
Nora leaned her head against Damian's shoulder, watching the afternoon sun sparkle across the leaves of the oak trees.
"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Vale?" Damian asked softly, his fingers gently playing with the gold ring on her finger.
Nora looked up at him, her hazel eyes filled with absolute peace.
"I was thinking about three words," she whispered.
Damian raised an eyebrow, a small, knowing smile touching his lips. "Which three words?"
Nora reached up, resting her palm over his strong, beating heart.

"We are free," she whispered.
Damian leaned down, pressing a soft, long kiss to her lips as the warm summer breeze blew through the roses, carrying their laughter out into the quiet, beautiful light.
