Chapter 6 - Ashes and Blood

The fire spread with terrifying speed, hungrily consuming forty years of dry pine dust and rotten timber.
Caleb charged through the flames, the iron crowbar swinging down in a brutal arc aimed directly at Damian's head.
Damian didn't dodge. He stepped into the swing, raising his left forearm to take the blow. The heavy iron smashed against his arm with a dull thud, pain flaring up his shoulder, but Damian didn't flinch. He grabbed the crowbar with his left hand, pulled Caleb forward, and drove his right fist deep into Caleb’s ribs.
Caleb gasped, dropping the iron, but his wild, unhinged rage kept him moving. He tackled Damian around the waist, slamming both of them back against the burning timber wall.
A heavy wooden beam above them cracked, sending a shower of sparks dropping into the smoke.
"Damian!" Nora screamed, grabbing a heavy brass lantern casing from the floor and smashing it with all her strength against the back of Caleb's head.
Caleb groaned, his grip slipping as he staggered sideways.
Damian didn't give him a second chance. He grabbed Caleb by the throat, driving him violently down into the dirt, holding him pinned beneath his knee as the fire roared higher around them.
Caleb choked, spitting blood, his hands clawing at Damian's fingers. "Kill me then..." Caleb wheezed, a dark, bloodied smile stretching across his broken jaw. "Finish it... like you did five years ago..."
Damian stared down at the man who had tormented Nora, who had invaded her life, who had tried to reduce her back to a terrified victim in a dark room.
He felt the cold, familiar instinct rise up in his chest—the instinct that had governed his family's business for two generations. The urge to end it cleanly, permanently, right here in the ashes.
Then he felt a warm, soft hand touch his shoulder through his burnt coat.
"Damian," Nora’s voice whispered through the smoke, clear, steady, and filled with absolute trust. "Don't. He's not worth your soul."
Damian paused.
He looked at Nora. Her hazel eyes were clear, untainted by fear or bloodlust. She wasn't begging. She was reminding him who he was.
Damian released Caleb’s throat.
He stood up, grabbing Nora by the hand, pulling her away from the roaring flames as the central roof structure began to cave in with a deafening roar.
Caleb lay on the dirt floor, coughing, looking up as heavy burning timber fell around him, blocking his path to the front doors.
"VALE!" Caleb screamed, his voice swallowed by the thunder of the collapsing roof.
Damian shoved the heavy double doors of the mill open, dragging Nora out into the cold, wet air of the clearing just as the entire wooden roof collapsed inward, sending a massive plume of fire and white ash soaring fifty feet into the night sky.
Leo and Miles Carter rushed forward from the trees, weapons drawn, medical kits in hand.
"Damian! Miss Whitaker!" Leo shouted, shielding his face from the intense heat of the inferno. "Are you hit?"
Damian didn't answer. He turned, pulling Nora into his arms, wrapping his heavy wool coat around her shivering shoulders.
Nora buried her face into his chest, her arms wrapping tightly around his waist, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his shirt.

"It's over," Damian whispered into her wet hair, pressing his lips to her forehead. "It's over, Nora."
Behind them, the old lumber mill burned down to the stone foundation, consuming every trace of Caleb Rourke's five-year obsession in a sea of red ash.
