Chapter 9 - The Private Vows

The small lady chapel at St. Patrick's Cathedral was bathed in the warm, colorful light of stained-glass windows depicting red and gold roses.

There were no media cameras, no business partners, and no political allies.

In the front row sat Mrs. Whitaker, sitting in a velvet wheelchair, her pale face bright with a clear, lucid smile as she held a bouquet of white lilies. Beside her stood Leo Vale, looking sharp in a navy tuxedo, holding the velvet ring box.

At the altar stood Damian and Nora.

Nora wore a simple, breathtaking ivory silk slip dress that hugged her curves with quiet elegance, her dark hair gathered in soft waves over her shoulders. Around her neck hung her father’s gold chain, perfectly repaired and polished.

Damian held both of her hands in his, his grey eyes soft, clear, and filled with an intensity that made everything else in the world fade into white noise.

The elderly priest finished the traditional readings, closing his prayer book.

"Damian," the priest said gently. "Do you have your own vows?"

Damian looked into Nora's eyes.

"I spent half my life believing that strength meant standing alone in the dark," Damian said, his deep voice carrying through the high stone arches of the chapel. "I built walls around my name, my business, and my heart because I thought peace was something you enforced with fear."

He gently rubbed his thumb over her knuckles.

"Then you walked into my life with flour on your hands and light in your eyes. You showed me that real courage isn't surviving a fight—it's having something beautiful enough that you're willing to protect it at all costs."

He took the gold band from Leo, sliding it onto Nora's left ring finger.

"I promise to honor you, respect you, and stand beside you through every storm, every dawn, and every quiet morning for the rest of my life."

Nora wiped a single, happy tear from her cheek, taking the second ring from the box.

"Damian," Nora spoke, her voice clear and strong. "Five years ago, I thought my life was over. I thought fear was the only thing I would ever be allowed to feel."

She slid the ring onto his broad finger, looking straight into his heart.

"You didn't just save me from the dark, Damian. You gave me a home. You showed me that I was worthy of being loved completely, without conditions, without terror, and without doubts. I give you my heart, my life, and my future, today and forever."

"By the authority vested in me," the priest smiled warmly, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Damian didn't wait. He wrapped his arms around Nora's waist, pulling her close against his chest, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, sacred kiss that sealed their lives together forever.
