Chapter 10 - THE KING AND HIS QUEEN

Matteo didn't wait for them to shoot.

He dove to the left behind a heavy steel container, drawing both of his pistols in a single fluid motion.

BANG! BANG!

Two Falcone guards crumpled to the floor before they could even aim their rifles.

From the high rafters above, three of Matteo’s elite snipers—who had snuck in through the roof twenty minutes before Matteo's arrival—opened fire with silenced rifles.

Thwip! Thwip! Thwip!

Mercenaries dropped like dominoes across the concrete floor. Panic erupted among the Falcone ranks as they realized they had been drawn into a meticulously planned kill box.

Matteo moved like a shadow through the gunsmoke, firing with terrifying, surgical precision.

Inside the SUV outside, Elena couldn't take it anymore.

She watched through the rain-streaked windshield as guards ran out of the side doors, firing blindly.

"Lev! Go help him!" she yelled to the driver.

"My orders are to stay with you, Miss—"

Before Lev could finish, a rogue Falcone mercenary charged toward the SUV, raising a grenade.

"Look out!" Elena shrieked.

Lev threw open the door, taking down the mercenary with two quick shots, but the body tumbled close to the vehicle.

Elena didn't hesitate. She scrambled into the front seat, put the heavy SUV into gear, and slammed her foot down on the accelerator.

The armored vehicle roared to life, crashing through the weak rusted doors of the silo like a battering ram!

BARRELING INSIDE!

The SUV smashed through the remaining barricades, crushing two mercenaries' cover and stopping directly between Clara and the remaining shooters.

Elena slammed the door open, springing out of the car. "Clara!"

She rushed to her sister, pulling out the dagger Matteo had left in her pocket and cutting the ropes around Clara's wrists.

"Elena!" Clara sobbed, throwing her arms around her sister's neck.

Across the smoke-filled room, Don Hector Falcone was trying to hobble toward the rear exit, using his silver cane frantically.

Matteo emerged from the smoke, stepping into his path. His suit was torn, his knuckles bloody, but he was completely unharmed.

"Matteo... please..." Hector whimpered, falling back onto his knees, dropping his cane. "We can make a deal! Millions... I have millions in Switzerland!"

Matteo stood over him, looking down with cold, absolute disgust.

"You poisoned an innocent accountant in his cell," Matteo said quietly. "You threatened my wife."

BANG.

A single shot echoed through the quiet building. Don Hector crumpled to the floor, silent forever.

Matteo lowered his weapon. He turned around, walking slowly through the clearing smoke toward the SUV.

Elena stood beside her sister, holding Clara tight against her side.

Matteo stopped in front of Elena. He looked at her silk dress—now stained with grease and soot—and at the brave, fierce fire burning in her dark eyes.

He cupped her face in his bloody, calloused hands, resting his forehead against hers.

"You rammed an armored car through a wall," Matteo murmured, a low, breathy chuckle escaping his chest.

"You were taking too long," Elena replied softly, tears of relief finally falling down her face.

Matteo smiled—a bright, beautiful smile that illuminated his dark face. He pulled her close, kissing her deeply, fiercely, right there in the middle of the ruined warehouse while sirening police lights began to paint the rainy sky outside in red and blue.

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the hills of Tuscany, Italy.

A magnificent vineyard sprawled across the rolling green valley, heavy with ripening grapes. At the center stood a historic stone villa with red-tiled roofs and white roses climbing the exterior walls.

Elena stood on the sunlit terrace, dressed in a light white sundress, sipping freshly pressed orange juice.

From down in the garden, the sound of happy laughter drifted up on the warm breeze. Sixteen-year-old Clara was running through the grapevines with a golden retriever puppy, her face healthy, radiant, and full of life.

Strong, familiar arms wrapped around Elena’s waist from behind.

Matteo pulled her gently back against his broad chest. He wore a simple linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up, looking completely relaxed—far removed from the cold mob boss of Chicago.

"Is the villa to your liking, my Queen?" Matteo murmured into her hair.

Elena leaned back into his warmth, looking out over the breathtaking Italian landscape. Her father's dream had finally come true. Her family was safe, the Falcone syndicate was completely dismantled, and her father's name had been officially cleared by the federal government.

"It's perfect, Matteo," Elena whispered, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck.

She looked into his gray eyes—eyes that were no longer cold as flint, but warm, deep, and filled with infinite love for her.

Matteo reached into his pocket, pulling out a small wooden object.

It was the restored antique music box. He wound the small brass key on the side and set it on the terrace table.

A sweet, golden melody began to play, floating gently out over the Tuscan valley.

Matteo took her hand, pulling her into a slow, gentle dance beneath the warm Italian sun.

"No wooden spoons today?" Matteo teased softly, a wicked smirk touching his lips.

Elena laughed, resting her head against his chest, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart.

"I don't need a spoon anymore," Elena whispered, looking up into his face. "I have the King."

Matteo leaned down, kissing her softly as the music played, holding her close in the life they had built together from the shadows of the past.
