Chapter 8 - THE HUNT IN THE STORM

The room plunged into absolute chaos.
Elena felt the world spin around her as Frank’s words slammed into her mind. "No... no! Clara!"
Matteo acted instantly. "Shut down the gates! Lock down every exit! No car leaves this property!"
He turned to Elena, taking her by her shoulders. "Frank, take her to the panic room in the basement."
"No!" Elena yelled, pulling away from him. "I'm coming with you! She's my sister!"
Matteo looked into her determined eyes, seeing the absolute refusal to sit quietly. He didn't waste time arguing.
"Frank, get the tactical gear. Move!"
Three minutes later, Matteo, Elena, and five armed security guards stood in Clara's second-floor bedroom.
The room was in disarray. A chair was overturned, the heavy velvet curtains torn from the window frame. Rain slammed violently against the open terrace glass.
On the nightstand, pinned down by a silver dagger, was a handwritten note.
Matteo pulled the dagger free, reading the note aloud in a lethal whisper:
"We have the girl. Bring the ledgers to the abandoned grain elevator at the South Docks by midnight, or her body goes into the lake. - Falcone."
Elena covered her mouth, a muffled sob escaping her throat. "The ledgers... but we don't have the ledgers! Clara said she didn't know where they were!"
"Clara didn't know," Matteo said, his eyes scanning the destroyed room. "But your father wasn't stupid, Elena. He hid things in plain sight."
Matteo walked quickly over to the fireplace in Clara's room. He reached up, taking down the stolen antique music box that Clara had taken from his study days ago.
He brought it over to the desk, pulled out a small tactical knife, and pried open the false velvet lining at the bottom of the wooden box.
Tucked neatly inside the secret compartment was a small, high-density black flash drive.
Elena gasped. "The ledgers..."
"Your father hid them inside my mother's music box ten years ago when he repaired it," Matteo realized, his jaw clenching hard. "He knew it was the one object in this house no one would ever throw away or search."
Matteo slid the flash drive into his inner pocket, pulling a dark Kevlar vest over his dress shirt and unholstering his twin pistols.
"Frank, stay with the house. Protect the perimeter," Matteo ordered.
"Boss, you can't go to the South Docks alone with just two men," Frank protested. "It’s a trap! Hector has fifty soldiers waiting in those grain silos!"
"Then they brought fifty men to a execution," Matteo said coldly.
He looked at Elena. "You stay here."
Elena stepped right up to him, grabbing the lapels of his Kevlar vest. "You told the city I was under your protection, Matteo Valente. My sister is part of me. You bring her back, or you take me with you."
Matteo looked down at her—at her fiery brown eyes, her unyielding courage, her refusal to break.

A dark, proud smile touched his lips.
"Get her a bulletproof vest," Matteo ordered his men. "We're going to the docks."
