Chapter 9 - BLOOD ON THE DOCKS

The rain fell in heavy, freezing sheets over the abandoned industrial docks of South Chicago.
The old grain elevator rose against the dark skyline like a rusted iron skeleton. Decaying wooden piers jutted out into the black, churning waters of Lake Michigan.
A single black SUV pulled to a silent stop outside the massive corrugated steel doors of the main silo.
Inside the vehicle, Matteo checked his weapons in the dim dashboard light. Elena sat in the back seat, wearing a dark tactical jacket over her silk gown, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
"Listen to me carefully, Elena," Matteo said, turning around to face her. "You stay in this vehicle with Lev. The windows are armor-plated. No matter what you hear inside, you do not step out."
"Matteo..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "Please be careful."
Matteo reached out, cupping her nape, pulling her face to his and planting a fierce, deep kiss on her lips. "I always win, Elena. Remember that."
He stepped out of the SUV into the pouring rain, accompanied by his lead tactical officer.
Matteo kicked the rusted steel door of the silo open with a deafening CRASH.
Inside, the giant warehouse was lit by flickering halogen work lamps hanging from high steel girders.
In the center of the concrete floor, tied to a wooden chair, was sixteen-year-old Clara. She was crying, her hair matted with water, a piece of heavy gray tape over her mouth.
Standing behind her was Don Hector Falcone, leaning on his silver cane, flanked by twelve heavily armed syndicate mercenaries carrying assault rifles.
"Matteo!" Hector shouted, his voice echoing through the hollow metal building. "You came alone! How romantic!"
Matteo walked calmly down the center aisle, stopping twenty feet away. Rain dripped from his black hair, but his eyes were entirely devoid of fear.
"Release the girl, Hector," Matteo said softly.
"Where are the ledgers?!" Hector demanded, pointing his cane at him. "Give me the flash drive, and maybe I'll let you crawl out of here alive!"
Matteo reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out the small black flash drive. He held it up between two fingers.
"It's all here, Hector," Matteo said. "Every offshore account. Every bribed judge. Every murder your family ordered for the last ten years."
Hector’s eyes flared with greed. "Throw it over!"
"No," Matteo replied smoothly.
He dropped the flash drive onto the concrete floor and brought his heavy tactical boot down directly on top of it.
CRUNCH.
The drive shattered into a hundred plastic and metallic pieces.
Hector gasped, his face twisting into pure horror. "You fool! You destroyed it!"
"I didn't destroy it," Matteo sneered, a cruel smirk spreading across his face. "I uploaded the entire contents to the Federal Bureau of Investigation ten minutes ago."
Hector turned pale as a corpse. "What?!"
"By now, federal agents are raiding your estate, your bank accounts, and your docks," Matteo whispered, his gray eyes flashing with lethal intent. "Your family is finished, Hector."
"KILL HIM!" Hector screamed in a panic. "KILL THEM ALL!"
