Chapter 10 - The Reign of the Emerald Queen

One year later.

The Meridian Grand Hotel was once again illuminated in brilliant gold, host to the annual Metropolitan Charity Ball. The grand ballroom was packed with Chicago’s most influential figures, the champagne flowing as freely as it had on the night of Marcus and Vivien’s ill-fated wedding.

Tonight, however, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Near the grand staircase, Patricia Aldridge sat alone in a corner booth, ignored by her former high-society friends. Her family’s wealth had been decimated by Marcus’s failed investments and her ex-daughter-in-law’s public disgrace. Marcus had moved to a small suburban town in Indiana, working as a junior clerk, his dreams of social dominance completely shattered. Vivien had left the country months ago, her name reduced to a cautionary whisper among the elite.

At eight o'clock precisely, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The crowd immediately fell silent, but it was not the awkward, tense silence of fear that had filled the room a year ago. It was a silence of absolute reverence, admiration, and respect.

Elena Salvatore walked into the room, looking breathtaking in a custom liquid-gold gown that caught every ray of light from the crystal chandeliers. Around her neck sat the magnificent Salvatore Emerald, glowing like a heart of green fire.

Beside her walked Dante Salvatore, looking every bit the king of the city, his hand resting proudly at the small of her back, his gray eyes soft with an obvious, deep devotion for the woman on his arm.

As they walked through the parted crowd, people bowed their heads, offering warm greetings and eager smiles. Elena responded to each one with grace, warmth, and effortless dignity.

They reached the grand dais at the front of the room—the very place where Marcus and Vivien had once stood in arrogant triumph.

Dante took two glasses of vintage champagne from a passing waiter, handing one to Elena.

He raised his glass toward her, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that still made her heart leap after a full year of marriage.

“To the girl who threw ice on my world,” Dante whispered softly, his voice meant for her ears alone. “And became the Queen of my heart.”

Elena smiled, clinking her crystal flute against his, the ring on her finger sparkling brilliantly under the chandelier light.

“To revenge,” Elena murmured, her eyes shining with endless love and happiness. “And the unexpected paradise it brought us.”

They drank together, standing side by side at the top of the room, looking out over the city they ruled together—strong, united, and utterly untouchable.
