Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Empire

Life as Dante Salvatore’s wife was a dizzying blur of luxury and absolute security. Within two weeks, Elena moved fully into the penthouse. A team of personal assistants, drivers, and bodyguards was assigned to her every need.

Yet, despite the opulence, Elena quickly realized that being a Salvatore meant living in a world of constant, low-humming danger.

Dante worked long hours from his private study or from his glass tower in the financial district. Men with solemn faces and tailored suits came and went at all hours of the night. Conversations stopped when she walked into rooms, and the guards outside her door never lowered their vigilance.

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Elena was sitting in the penthouse library, reading a book on art history, when the double doors burst open.

Dante walked in, his dark coat soaked with rain. His tie was loosened, his hair messy, and his expression dark with fury. Behind him was Romano, carrying a silver briefcase.

“Elena,” Dante said, stopping dead when he saw her. He smoothed his features instantly, though the tension in his shoulders remained. “I didn't know you were in here.”

“What happened?” Elena asked, setting her book aside and standing up. She noticed a faint stain of dark red on his white shirt cuff. “Dante... is that blood?”

Dante looked down at his cuff, annoyance flashing across his face. “A minor dispute at the docks. Nothing for you to worry about.”

“Don't dismiss me,” Elena said firmly, stepping closer to him. “We are married, Dante. You said you expected loyalty, but loyalty goes both ways. If I am going to live in this house, I need to know what kind of war you are fighting.”

Dante stared at her for a long moment, then let out a sharp sigh. He motioned for Romano to leave the room, closing the doors behind her.

“Richard Sterling,” Dante said softly, walking over to the fireplace and pouring himself a drink. “Vivien’s father.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed. “What about him?”

“He realized that my marriage to you meant he would never receive the credit line he needed,” Dante explained, turning to face her. “Desperate men do foolish things. He attempted to make a deal with a rival Syndicate family from Detroit—the Moretti organization. He offered them access to my shipping routes in exchange for capital.”

Elena gasped. “He’s trying to attack you?”

“He tried,” Dante corrected coldly. “The Morettis sent a message to one of my warehouses this morning. I replied in kind. Richard Sterling’s real estate company will go bankrupt by Friday, and he will likely face federal indictment for fraud before the month is over.”

Elena stood still, processing the news. Six months ago, Richard Sterling was an untouchable titan of Chicago society, a man who treated her like dust beneath his shoes. Now, with a few words from Dante, his entire life was collapsing.

“And Vivien?” Elena asked quietly.

“Vivien and Marcus built their future on her father’s fortune,” Dante said, walking over to stand beside her. “When the fortune disappears, their marriage will follow. Marcus’s firm has already begun distancing themselves from him to avoid being dragged into the federal investigation.”

Elena looked down at her hands. Part of her felt a faint pang of sorrow for the waste of human lives, but a larger, stronger part of her felt a deep sense of justice.

“You did this for me?” she whispered.

“I did it because they dared to hurt what belongs to me,” Dante said, his voice dropping into that deep, intimate register that made her heart skip a beat.

He reached out, his long fingers cupping her cheek. His skin was warm against her cool skin.

“You are my wife, Elena,” Dante murmured, his thumb trailing across her lower lip. “In my world, anyone who attempts to harm my family is erased. No exceptions.”

Elena looked up into his smoke-gray eyes, seeing the danger, the darkness, and the unyielding devotion hidden beneath his cold exterior.
