Chapter 7 - The Gala of Retribution

The Annual Chicago Autumn Gala was the undisputed pinnacle of the city’s social calendar. Held in the historic Art Institute, it was an evening where high fashion, massive political power, and endless wealth collided beneath grand glass ceilings.

Tonight, however, the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. Everyone knew that Dante and Elena Salvatore would be attending as a couple for the first time since their unexpected, secret wedding.

Elena stepped out of the private limousine, her hand resting gracefully on Dante’s arm.

She wore a breathtaking white silk gown designed by a top Italian couturier. The dress fit her like a second skin, draped elegantly over one shoulder, while a diamond choker glittered around her neck like a collar of stars. Her dark hair was styled in soft, glamorous waves, and her confidence was absolute.

Dante looked impossibly handsome in a custom charcoal tuxedo, his hand firmly resting at the small of her back as they walked up the red-carpeted stairs, surrounded by the flashing bulbs of fifty photographers.

Inside the museum’s grand hall, the crowd gasped as they entered.

“Look at her,” a high-society woman whispered loudly. “She looks like a movie star.”

“I heard Dante bought her an estate in Lake Forest for her birthday,” another added enviously.

Elena smiled, navigating the crowd with effortless grace. She spoke with ambassadors, art curators, and business leaders, holding her own in every conversation. Beside her, Dante looked like a proud emperor watching his empress conquer new territory.

Near the champagne fountain, Elena spotted two familiar figures standing in the shadows.

It was Marcus and Vivien.

The transformation was shocking.

Vivien wore a dress that was clearly from last season’s collection. Her tiara was gone, her makeup was thick and poorly applied, and her face was lined with stress and exhaustion. Her father’s public bankruptcy had ruined her reputation, leaving her an outcast among the very women who had once flattered her.

Marcus looked even worse. His designer tuxedo looked slightly loose on his shrinking frame, his eyes were bloodshot, and he clutched a glass of cheap wine with white knuckles. His investment firm had demoted him, stripping him of his major accounts following his association with the Sterling scandal.

As Elena walked past them with Dante, Vivien stepped forward, her eyes wild with desperation and jealousy.

“Elena!” Vivien called out, her voice sharp and trembling.

Elena stopped and turned around slowly, her posture regal and calm. Dante stood beside her, his hand resting casually in his pocket, his eyes locking onto Vivien with cold indifference.

“Vivien,” Elena said smoothly. “Good evening.”

“How... how can you do this?” Vivien spat, tears of rage welling in her eyes. “You destroyed my father! You destroyed Marcus! You stole everything that was supposed to be mine!”

The surrounding guests fell silent, turning to watch the confrontation.

Elena looked at her former best friend without a drop of malice, only deep, quiet pity.

“I didn't destroy your father, Vivien,” Elena said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet circle of guests. “His own greed and illegal dealings destroyed him. And I didn't destroy Marcus. He destroyed himself the day he chose ambition over loyalty.”

“You think you’re better than us?” Vivien sneered, taking a step closer, though Dante’s security chief subtly moved to block her path. “You’re just a maid’s daughter playing dress-up! He’s going to get tired of you, Elena! A man like Dante Salvatore will throw you away the moment he’s bored!”

Before Elena could answer, Dante stepped forward.

The air in the grand hall seemed to drop ten degrees instantly. Dante didn't raise his hand or yell; he simply looked down at Vivien with an expression of absolute, terrifying disgust.

“Mrs. Aldridge,” Dante said, his voice dropping like an anvil into the silent room. “You are currently speaking to the matriarch of the Salvatore family. If you say another word to my wife, I will personally ensure that your husband’s remaining assets are seized by the federal government before midnight, and that you and your family are banned from every private club, hotel, and restaurant from here to New York.”

Vivien froze. The color drained from her face until she looked completely lifeless.

Marcus quickly grabbed Vivien’s arm, pulling her back with frantic terror. “We’re leaving! Mr. Salvatore, Elena... we’re so sorry. We’re leaving right now!”

Marcus dragged his sobbing wife away through the crowd, fleeing the museum like beaten animals.

Elena watched them go, then turned to Dante. He was looking down at her, his expression softening instantly into one of deep tenderness.

“Are you alright?” Dante asked quietly.

Elena smiled, leaning in to press a gentle kiss against his jaw. “I have never been better, my love.”
