Chapter 7 - The Double Edge

The revelation hung in the damp cellar air like heavy poison.

Damian stood motionless, holding his weapon, his mind tearing through three years of memories—late nights in his office, shared quiet flights across the Atlantic, the soft scent of her perfume, the unshakeable loyalty he thought he had found in a chaotic world.

It had all been an operation. Every smile, every gesture, every late-night report.

"Is this true, Khloe?" Damian asked, his voice dropping into a flat, hollow tone that sounded dead.

Khloe choked back a sob, her hands trembling in the heavy wire bindings behind her back. "Yes," she whispered, her voice breaking. "My father was Mateo Valenti. They sent me to destroy you, Damian. I was supposed to give them the encryption keys to your accounts six months ago."

"Then why didn't you?" Damian asked softly.

Julian’s smile vanished. His jaw tightened in sudden, genuine anger. "That is precisely why we are having this conversation today, Damian. Because my dear niece fell victim to a terrible, pathetic weakness."

Julian grabbed Khloe’s hair, pulling her head back violently. "She stopped sending the updates. She started clearing your security logs without sending us the copies. She tried to erase her own family's access to your servers last week."

Khloe screamed softly as Julian pulled her hair, but her eyes remained locked on Damian.

"I saw who you really were, Damian!" Khloe wept, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her face. "They told me you were a monster who killed for greed! But I worked beside you for three years! I saw how you protected your people! I saw how you carried the weight of every life under your command! I couldn't do it anymore!"

"You betrayed your own blood for him!" Julian roared, pressing the cold barrel of his revolver against Khloe’s temple.

"I saved his life!" Khloe shouted back, staring fearlessly into Julian’s eyes. "Because he is a better man than you or my father ever were!"
