Chapter 3 - The Broken Ledger

I couldn't breathe.
The room, the luxury, the smell of rain and blood—it all felt like a stage set constructed around me.
I backed away from the bed until my shoulders hit the wood paneling near the closet. "No. You're lying. You're a crime boss trying to manipulate me. Tom had a gambling addiction! I saw his bank statements! I saw the collection notices!"
"And who signed those collection notices?" Dominic challenged softly, struggling to prop himself up on one elbow. He gasped, pain flaring across his face, but he didn't stop. "Check your duffel bag, Clara."
"What?"
"The bag Val gave you. Look under the cash."
My heart pounded like a trapped bird against my ribs. I walked back to the chair on shaking legs, reached into the black duffel bag, and pushed aside the heavy bricks of currency.
At the bottom lay a manila folder.
I pulled it out. My fingers trembled so violently I could barely open the clasp.
Inside were bank records, wire transfers, and loan agreements. My name was at the top of every page—Clara Hayes. But below my signature was the corporate seal of the lender: Vanguard Medical Holdings, a parent company of Apex Concierge Medicine.
And below that was the signature of the man who had authorized the loan transfer to the shark Vance.
The signature read: Thomas Hayes.
Attached to the back was a canceled check for forty thousand dollars made out directly to Tom, dated three days after he vanished.
"He didn't run away in fear," I whispered, the paper shaking in my hand as the horrific truth shattered my reality. "He sold me."
"He traded your nursing license and your freedom to clear his own skin," Dominic said, his voice laced with dark, protective fury. "He made a deal with Apex. They needed a disposable nurse who could be controlled through debt. Someone smart enough to perform high-level trauma care, but broken enough not to ask questions."
A tear slipped down my cheek, hot and bitter. Two years. Two years of working twenty-hour shifts, of skipping meals, of sleeping with a baseball bat beside my bed, terrified that Vance’s thugs would break down my door. Two years of feeling like a failure because I couldn't save my marriage or my home.
It was all a lie.
I had been orchestrated. Used like a pawn on a board I didn't even know existed.
"Why are you telling me this?" I sobbed, looking at Dominic through blurred vision. "If you know all this, then you're part of it too! You use Apex! You called them tonight!"
"I didn't call Apex," Dominic said, his dark eyes blazing with an absolute intensity that made me freeze. "Val called them because he didn't know Apex was compromised. But I’ve been tracking Vanguard Holdings for six months, Clara. They aren't just a medical firm. They’re a front for the Castiglione syndicate—my rivals."
He reached out his hand to me again. This time, I didn't back away.
"They set your husband up, they bound you in debt, and tonight, they sent you here expecting me to die on your watch," Dominic growled softly. "If I died, you would be charged with medical malpractice and murder. Apex would wipe their hands, and Vance would take whatever was left of you."
I dropped the file onto the bed. My whole body was shaking with an overwhelming mixture of heartbreak and white-hot rage.
"They used me," I whispered.
"Yes," Dominic said, his grip firm and warm as he grabbed my wrist, pulling me close until I was kneeling by his bedside again. "They used you. But they made one mistake."
May you like
"What mistake?"
"They gave you to me."
