Chapter 9 - The Sovereign

Three weeks later.

The morning sun broke bright and golden over Lower Manhattan, scattering white reflections across the East River.

I stood on the balcony of a breathtaking, four-story penthouse in Brooklyn Heights, looking out at the Manhattan skyline.

The past twenty-one days had passed like a whirlwind.

Apex Concierge Medicine had been dismantled by federal authorities following a massive sting operation based on the documents Dominic provided. Vance and Tom were both locked away in a federal facility, waiting for trial without bail.

My debt was officially dissolved by court order. My credit was cleared. My nursing license was untouched.

I was completely, utterly free.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling my back gently against a broad, warm chest.

Dominic leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to the side of my neck. He was completely healed now—his stitches removed, his strength fully restored.

"You're thinking too loud," Dominic whispered, his deep voice vibrating against my spine.

I smiled, turning in his arms to look up into his dark, striking eyes. "I was just thinking about how different my life was a month ago."

"A month ago, you were saving my life," Dominic murmured, his fingers gently tracing the line of my jawline. "And now?"

"Now I'm running the Russo Foundation's private medical clinic," I said, resting my hands against his chest.

After everything cleared, Dominic hadn't just given me money. He had built a brand-new, state-of-the-art free medical facility on the Brooklyn waterfront, appointing me as the Director of Medicine. It was everything I had ever dreamed of—a place where real people could get world-class care without fear of bills or corruption.

"You built that clinic yourself, Clara," Dominic said softly. "I just bought the brick and steel."

"You gave me my life back, Dominic."

"No," he corrected, looking down at me with an intensity that made my breath catch in my throat. "You took your life back. I just had the good sense to fall in love with the woman who did it."

My heart skipped a beat.

He had never said the word before. We had spent nights together, shared kisses that burned like fire, built an empire out of the ashes of a war, but hearing him say it out loud in the bright morning light made everything feel real.

"In love with me?" I teased softly, a bright smile breaking across my face. "The nurse who threatened to break your guards' fingers?"

"Especially for that," Dominic grinned, pulling me closer, his lips hovering an inch from mine. "Stay with me, Clara. Not just for one night. For all of them."

"That's going to cost you, Mr. Russo," I whispered back.

"Name your price."

"Your heart," I said. "In full, cleared funds."

May you like

"It was yours the moment you laid hands on my wound," Dominic said.

And then his lips met mine, deep, slow, and possessing, sealing a promise that no debt, no war, and no dark past could ever break.
