Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The gun felt heavy and cold in my hand.

The warehouse fell dead silent, save for the rain pounding against the tin roof above.

Vance was shaking, his knees knocking together. Castiglione stood frozen, his mind desperately calculating escape routes that didn't exist with Val’s men lining the perimeter.

And Tom sat tied to the chair, staring at the barrel of the gun in my hand, tears mixing with the blood on his face.

"Clara... please," Tom whimpered, sweating profusely. "We were married! We made vows! You're a nurse, you heal people, you don't kill!"

"You killed me two years ago, Tom," I whispered.

I raised the gun, pointing it straight at his chest.

My finger rested against the trigger. My mind flashed through every night I had spent weeping over unpaid bills, every time my hand had trembled in fear at a knock on my door, every hour I had given away to Apex to pay for his greed.

I could pull the trigger right now. And with Dominic Russo standing beside me, no cop would ever ask a single question.

Dominic stood quietly at my shoulder. He didn't pressure me. He didn't tell me what to do. He simply gave me the power I had been robbed of for two years.

I lowered the gun.

Tom let out a massive, hysterical sob of relief. "Thank you, Clara! Thank you—"

"I'm not killing you, Tom," I said, turning my back on him. "Death is too easy. You don't get to die."

I handed the pistol back to Dominic.

"What do you want done with him?" Dominic asked softly, his eyes searching my face with intense respect.

"Give him to the federal authorities," I said. "He signed the forged wire documents for Vanguard Holdings. Put him in a federal prison for twenty years. Let him spend every single day thinking about the nurse he thought he could sell."

Dominic smiled—a genuine, proud expression. "Consider it done."

He turned to Val. "Take Tom Hayes and Vance to the FBI field office in Manhattan. Drop them on the steps with the Vanguard folder."

"And Castiglione, sir?" Val asked, pointing his weapon at Julian.

Dominic’s expression darkened into sheer ice. He didn't hesitate. He raised his pistol and fired a single shot into Castiglione’s kneecap.

Castiglione screamed, collapsing to the floor, clutching his ruined leg.

"Julian stays alive," Dominic said coldly, looking down at his bleeding rival. "So he can watch me take every dock, every ship, and every building his family owns in this city. By midnight tomorrow, the Castigliones are bankrupt."

Dominic turned back to me, holding out his hand.

"Come, Clara. We're done here."
