Chapter 10 - THE FREEDOM OF THE TRUTH

Two years later.
I stood on the bluff overlooking the ocean at sunset.
The waves crashed against the black rocks far below, throwing white spray high into the salty air.
I wore a comfortable cream sweater and jeans, my hair blowing freely in the ocean wind.
In my pocket, my phone buzzed with a notification.
It was an automated legal update from the state correctional board:
Notice of Parole Hearing: Inmate #48291 (Sterling, Julian). Status: Denied. Remaining sentence: 24 months.
I read the notification once, then clicked 'Delete'.
Julian Sterling no longer held any power over my mind, my heart, or my story. He was merely a ghost from a past life I had long since outgrown.
I took a deep breath of the crisp ocean air, feeling the immense, soaring freedom of my own truth.
I had survived the worst betrayal a person could face. I had stood at the altar of lies and walked away to claim my own life.
Behind me, the sound of boots crushing soft gravel echoed along the coastal path.
I turned around.
Ethan walked up the trail, carrying a plaid blanket and a thermos of hot cocoa. He wore an old jacket, his hair messy from the wind, a bright, genuine smile spreading across his face when he saw me.
"The wind is picking up," Ethan called out over the roar of the waves. "I brought reinforcements!"
I laughed, walking toward him. "You always come prepared."
Ethan spread the blanket out over a flat patch of grass away from the cliff edge, inviting me to sit beside him. I settled down, wrapping a corner of the blanket around my shoulders.
He poured two cups of steaming cocoa, handing one to me. Our hands brushed, warm and comfortable.
We sat together in peaceful silence, watching the sun dip below the dark blue horizon, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and violet.
Ethan leaned in softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the side of my temple.
"I love you, Clara," he said quietly.
Simple words. Honest words.
I turned my head, looking into his clear, loving eyes, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart beside mine.
I didn't hear four words of control.
I heard two hearts standing on equal ground.
I smiled, leaning my head onto his shoulder as the stars began to twinkle in the darkening sky above the sea.

"I love you too, Ethan," I whispered.
And for the first time in my life, I knew it was real.
